No, I haven't heard about that but I'm usually learning 'bout these things after the fact...

I would be most interested to hear how this goes - keep me posted!

Have you heard anymore rumours of the mooted Oppo HD DVD Bluray hybrid machine?

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

Oppo are about to release their final edition of their SD DVD player, Oppo DV-983H, most likely in March. Until the markets soaks up this release, we won't be seeing anything from Oppo regarding high definition players until at least 3rd or 4th quarter of this year.

At this point in time it is very unlikely that they will produce a hybrid machine and like others, have been watching the HD wars closely before commiting to one format or another or both. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a hybrid player myself but I don't think it will ever happen. I could be wrong and I hope so.

Don't forget, Oppo is about releasing a best bang for your buck featured player in return for high revenue dividends and I don't think a hybrid will be the solution, if you know what I mean.

However, it takes bravery to commit to one format and not the other. The market is a fickle place. Some tough choices for Oppo.

Cheers
Pasadena

Houston, we have lift-off!

Just got word from Shawn that the HD-XA2 works perfectly with the new boards in it and will ship on Monday. Yahoo! As I was the first to have this particular player modified, Shawn charged just $50 for the install. My total bill for the modification including shipping both ways was about $300. Anyone else wanting this exact player modded will pay about $400- still a stellar deal. Further updates to come...

Happy Trails!

Shawn forwarded some photos of the install. I suspect one could purchase the boards from him and a set of photo-illustrated instructions and have a competent local tech do the install.

Happy Trails!

Might want to inquire of DVDUpgrades in Switzerland. They offer a 3xSPDIF output board for SACD, so I don't think it's a stretch that this might also work for HDDVD/BR.

Hey Simon,

The dvdupgrades board is a different critter altogether in that it turns a DSD bit stream into a PCM bit stream. -Not to mention that it is about triple the price...

Yes, you are quite right about the price - and not the speediest process either. It just occurred to me that it might not be that much of a stretch to wonder if Frederik Steinfels and crew could not modify the board to handle the HD decoding to PCM also.

My problem is that a 3xSPDIf Bluray player will have me at three mch sources, and although others have suggested a component switcher is pretty transparent, I would prefer a direct connect to 861. So demanding ....

Simon

Hey Simon,

Speaking of DVDupgrades modded players- I see from your signature you own both an 800D and a modded up 3910. What sort of difference(s) in sound quality do you find between the 800 and 3910 when playing back DVD-Aa?. Also, how does the 3910's 3X SPDIF handle Dolby Digital and DTS bit streams? Does it offer internal decoding of these lossy codecs and then multi-channel PCM output over the 3X SPDIF like our M CD/DVD/DVD-A transports? Thanks.

Happy Trails!

Not sure I'm going to be terribly helpful here as I just use the Denon 3910 as a digital solution for SACD. When I first got the unit, i tried it with DVD-A but could only get 2.0,not 5.1 - since it took forever to get this piece from DVDUpgrades I decided it was not worth the hassle of sending it back for a diagnosis, particularly since it works really well with SACD. Also, as the 800 is so good with DVD-A, there was no pressing sound-quality reason to use the 3910 - incidentally, before the 800 i had the G98, which to my ears sound identical when playing DVD-A back through my 861.

Any opinions on the feasibility of Shawn's 3xSPDIF conversion for a PS3. I don't own one currently, but have been seriously considering picking one up as a blu-ray player. My teenage sons are counseling me regarding the wisdom of this choice for some reason.

Cheers, Ian

I guess that 3xSPDIF is not going to work with a PS3. You need a 5.1 analog output to be able to get the I2S signals that go to the DACs.
