Ok I know why bother with MP3`s, however I cannot get my 596 to play them is there a fault with my machine ( apart from having good taste!) or is there a specific way of burning the CD`s so that they can be read.

I've had *real* issues playing back MP3 files. For example: tunes ending part way through, single tunes appearing as multiple tracks, playback of two different tracks at the same time, skipping between two tunes and ignoring half the stuff on a disk to name but a few. Also I've not yet figured how the 596 decides on the play order.
All the disks play perfectly on my (cheap) Aiwa car stereo.
I use Nero 5.5 and I've tried different media (CDR, CD/RW, 650Mb and 700Mb) but not licked the problems yet. I suppose I should spend some time trying different burning programs and speeds to see if that makes any difference.
Maybe the new firmware will sort it out?

RTFM.
At the end of the "troubleshooting" section of the 596 manual, it gives details of how to create a CD with MP3 files on it. The player will play files in the order in which they are recorded on the disc.
I do it by naming files like this:
001_Britney.MP3 002_Corrs.MP3 003_CrustyFolkMusic.MP3
etc. The numeric beginnings mean that the alphabetical sort on my CD writing software puts the tracks in the order I expect. Your CD writing software may be different.
