Hi, I'm woundering if this would work.

I'm thinking about getting a G68D and using the new Cary Cinema 11v video processor for my HDMI switching/scaling needs. This has an digital audio optical out, can i pass this to the G68D and do the audio (dolby Digital, DTS, etc.)processing there for a 5.1/7.1 HT setup?

Thank you
John

Possibly but not the new HD formats like TrueHD or dts-MA.

Ok, thank you.

Do you think this would be a good solution or are there better ways/video processors.

I'll be using DSP speakers in a 5.1 setup. TrueHD or dts-MA would be nice but not essential right now, but it would be nice to upgrade to it when Meridian supports it.

It is very interesting that the 11v uses "the new FL30436 chip from Genesis that is a Faroudja DCDi design" when other manufacturers (Meridian excepted for obvious reasons) are going for Gennum, HQV and ABT solutions.

What's Cary's track record (if any) on video processing and processors? The 11v looks nice and could be excellent, but I would caution on buying a VP from a manufacturer with no proven history in this area. There is no mention whatsoever of any calibration capabilities in this device which are an essential VP feature IMO; this may be an omission, but may also be a pointer that this unit is essentially an HDMI switch, deinterlacer and scaler. How much is it

As we know from Meridian's recent demonstrations of the DVP6080, the latest Genesis/Faroudja designs seem to be concentrating quite heavily on frame interpolation (which may or may not be a good thing).

You should certainly consider the other VPs out there at this time, the Crystalio II, DVDO VP50 Pro, and of course the Lumagen Radiance XD, but you might want to wait for the v1.3a HDMI incarnations of these.

Thank you for the thoughts, some very good points to consider.

The Cary has a retail price of $3500. so it's competing price wise with all the VPs you mention.

I looked at the three other VP's and maybe these are better choices. But one question, it looks for me that both the Crystallio II and DVDO have 1.3a HDMI implementet is it just the Lumagen that is missing this or is it some thing I'm missing. Also there is no Optical out on the lumagen, will the coax work just as good?

I have plenty of time making a decision as I'm not planning to implement this late this summer when my new home will be complete, which is good since I'm a complete newbie to this and only jused to plain stereo equipment.

Thank you

John

John, I'm biased as I am a Radiance Beta tester; but it's already an excellent piece of kit. By this summer, it is very likely that the Radiance will be being shipped with 1.3a. The software will be quite mature by then too.

The Meridian processor's has plenty of digital inputs both coaxial and optical you won't run short on these, the only missing piece is HDMI for the moment.

So the coax would work just fine or even better if you ask some.

I'll tend to save the optical inputs for "crappy" sources like tv-boxes, that gives some degre of elektrical isolation between them
