This may seem like a naive question, or at least one that has been asked before. I couldn't find the question posed or answered, so I though I would ask. What is a "redbook CD"? Where could I find a reference list of these CD's?

This site may give you a bit more info regarding the Redbook spec. I think you would have to pay for the full spec.

In summary, any 5" optical disc that claims to be a Compact Disc MUST comply with the Red Book.

Any disc that does not comply with the spec must NOT me marketed as a Compact Disc.

Simon.

If that's the case, why are there so many references to "redbook CD's" when people are "testing" new or altered products?

Modern products plays many formats and redbook CD I believe is when you are referring to the players performance on normal/common audio-CD's. But there is DVD which is also on a compact disc and there are all kinds of stuff such as vcd, svcd, sacd...It's a way to clarify what you mean I guess. Just saying audio CD cud be mistaken for SACD or whatever..

Each 5" optical media is a different spec. Red, white, orange, etc. A DVD player only has to support DVD, nothing else.
