I can understand the relevance of 1080p24 for HD-DVD and Blu-ray, but would 1080p/24 be of relevance with upscaled DVD's or is 1080p50/60 more in keeping with the internally stored format.

I have never fully understood how each frame of a DVD is actually stored on disc - whether they are progressive, interlaced, or segmented frame.

But would I be right in saying that they are encoded at 25 or 30 fps, thus, extracting a 24 fps feed from these would not offer any benefit over and above what may be done inside a standard TV.

The reason I ask is that, with all the talk of judder on smooth pans, my G98/TV combo behaves differently on the 'Pan over the castle' scene towards the beginning of Pirates of the Caribbean 1 in PAL. When viewing in component mode, the fly past is silky smooth, but in HDMI/DVI mode, I see a very slight judder. I have seen 3:2 pulldown, and I don't think it is that as its not as noticable (as 3:2) and the disc is PAL.

Just wondering if a decent extract to 24fps by a G9x/800 would cure this - assuming my TV could accept 1080p24. My display will accept 1080p50/60 but due to the data rate, not display things smoothly. I give it a 50:50 chance of being able to accept 1080p24/25/30 and would hope that the reduced data rate would finally allow smooth 1080p playback.

DVDs are stored as 50/60Hz interlaced depending on their region. But there is still exactly the same benefit as for HD from using a scaler to derive a 24Hz frame rate or multiple from an NTSC DVD, eg no 3:2 cadence stutter... PAL shouldn't really have this issue as it's a 2:2 format, so 50Hz from source should still be stutter free.

The problem with PAL DVDs is that they go to fast;) about 4%
