Maybe I can get hold of a box that will output 8 channel PCM from HDMI as 4 stereo pairs of SPDIF. If you are interested, please let me know.

@George: Please correct me if I am wrong, but as long as I have one DSP speaker configured as master (currently my DSP5000c), and the other speakers connected through a S-Box (currently on the back of my 565, but there is a separate box available from M), I can control the volume of all DSP speakers simultaneously.

You never said you had the 565, if you that you can control it.

I'm not sure about selecting D2 inputs on speakers though and still work with 565 as "normal". D2 is active and selectable when not configured as Meridian Digital Theater.

I do not need the 565 to control the volume of the DSP speakers, I only use it as "S-Box" (to connect the slave leads).
You can configure each DSP speaker to select the D1 or D2 input depending on the source you select. You only need to do this for the left speakers and center (which is the left channel of the combined left/sub channel).

Look at some of the newer video processors like Gefen and DVDO that accept audio via HDMI and can output concurrently on HDMI and S/PDIF or TOSLINK. [/b]
The DVDO processors won't transcode Hi-Res audio from HDMI through to SPDIF/TosLink, just standard 16bit/44k along with plain-jane DD/DTS. It is my understanding that the bandwidth required by multi-channel Hi-Res digital audio is beyond the capacity of a single SPDIF or TosLink connection.

Happy Trails!

The good news is that I can get a box to convert HDMI to 4 times SPDIF (so the full 7.1). This would be the way to connect HD-DVD, Bluray and the latest generation of consoles (Xbox360 elite and PS3) digitally to either your G68, 861 or DSP speakers.
However, there's a big catch ... I need to order 100 units, since they have to be built custom. I still hope to get a quote for less units, but don't think this will happen. So the question: how many Meridian users would be interested in this?

It of course depends on price and functionality/quality.

I think if you added 7.1 analogue out to the mix you would have a much wider audience - ie outside M circles. They may cost a bit more, but you would probably get more takers which should bring the unit cost down.

It may be worth posting your question on AVS forums as I suspect there may be interest amongst (ex) Theta and TaCT users who hang out there.

Cheers, Ian

I have my liability hat on. I'm not sure this is appropriate discussion for this forum. As far as I understand this is an "illegal box".

If folks have any knowledge regarding the legality of such a device I'm willing to listen.

I don't care what folks do with their own time, money and morals. But I do when it puts this site at risk.

Other sites might be willing to take more risk than me.

At least the application we want to use the box for is far from illegal: enjoying next gen surround sound on our beloved Meridian equipment.
