I have not loaded it yet and don't know what it does.

It appears to be a minor release.

Yep. With the G68, it looks like solved an analogue subwoofer bass problem that hardly anyone noticed. Or maybe I had noticed it?!!!

After loading it, I'm experiencing a display bug:

When I use the more soft key from standby and then select version to confirm the firmware version, I get the following message:

"bad code combination"

If I press the button again, I get the version display

Here is my take on that error message- but my opinion is not the final say and others should chime in here.

I have seen it sometimes with uploads and the processor works fine afterwards so I choose to ignore it. I have also seen it be a real problem. If it turns into a problem the best way to resolve it is to "retype". I forget the exact procedure- but its in your owners manual. Basically you are telling the processor to reload a factory preset. This WILL ERASE your info so the thing to do is make sure your MSF file is upto date- do not fetch otherwise youll lose MRC info. Just look at settings and move over by hand. When you retype the instructions will tell you to hold an u arrow- they really mean the up volume button- I stood there for what felt like hours holding the up arrow button feeling like an idiot. Press the up volume button. Once you have done this- load the new firm ware again- it should load with no error messages. Then you deploy your settings, etc. A little PITA but worth it IMHO.

btw- heres what M says about their firmware:

I think I know how to reset the type although I don't recognize the step involving the volume button. Maybe because I have a G68 and you are talking about an 861? Anyway I did try resetting the type a few times but it has not eliminated the display bug the first time the version button is selected. Everything else seems to work ok. Anyone else experiencing the same thing or have any suggestions?

Try flashing again. It may have got an error on one file and didn't upload.

Watch it as it uploads that it finds all files and they all get uploaded.

My 861 uploaded smoothly.

s.o.s.
stepwise:
-G68, an early one, does fine with original programming (from CD named MSSCD 3.16, revised 2004-01-03)
-Hoping to get Zone2/Zone3 more functional, I updated to firmware 1.35.
-Did well until I wished to make some later modifications. What I had saved would carry to the page checking for new software, but not farther into the configuration program.
-Then I tried the original CD. Wasn't pretty.
-Next I deleted everything Meridian on laptop, tried old CD again, and then tried a redownload of the new programs.
-Still can't get through configuration. And now all DSP's have a "tinny" distorted sound.
-I do not have a computer background, but beginning to pick it up.
-Dealer 100 miles away has restructured and no longer has a showroom, working out of a warehouse, focusing on home-installs/other products.
- ? my next best move? thanks!

This was the same message I got when I uploaded only the 861_425.mfu file. When I re-read the notes and uploaded the 861_v4.mfp and all the mfus assosicated with the package it worked fine.

I managed to get everything working and will pass on what I found I had to do. If you access the flash update from mconfig, it finds a macro file (mfp) that uploads 6 files. Alternatively, you can go into program files and if you click on the macro file, it will also upload all 6 files. The problem I had is that in running through the macro, it would fail on one of the files. After several failures, I found that if I instead clicked on the files that were failing individually, they successfully downloaded. Out of curiosity and as a double check, I then went back and ran the macro and it successfully downloaded all the files without problem. I'm mystified why this was necessary to get it to work but it was.

There seems to be an issue when the updater is used with some types of USB/Serial converters - especially those based on the prolific chipset.

Meridian have introduced a throttle/interval on later versions of the flash loader which, if you experience problems, may be worth adjusting so see if it fixes the problem. I think you access this interval from mconfig -> view/options/serial port.

Anyone have an idea of what this really means?

Why do you want to go back to old firmware, it wasn't clear?

It is often not safe (or more complex) to go backwards and I would avoid it if possible.

If you have already started down this whole path of upgrades. Then finish it with the latest of everything.
