Does anyone have opinions on DSP3100's (or maybe 33's) for nearfield use i.e. on a desk? GMT's recent thread seems very positive about M33's in a similar situation.
I'm finding myself spending more time in front of the PC's in my little office, so much so that I've got an SB3 hooked up in there via some semi-pro nearfield monitors, and rarely use my main living room setup anymore except for movies.
So I'm looking for a stereo setup, sat on a desk at close range. Has anyone got experience/opinions on running these at close range, and low listening levels?
Cheers, Simon

Welcome to the Forum Simon. Could this be an area for the F80? Whats that you ask? Not long to wait and see now. Cheers, Chris
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

The more snippets I get about the F80 the less it appeals as something that might meet my needs!
I now envisage a Meridian portable - an answer to the Bose radio perhaps.

Hi Simon
Ideally I would have DSP33s - that way you could go straight in with a digital cable from your PC and squeezebox.
Cheers Tom

Any reason not to consider DSP3100's? It looks like I can go straight in with two coax digital connections. And if I read things right the 3100's can be operated directly via a remote; the 33's look like they need a 512 Remote Eye, or a controller/processor. I was not planning on using RS232 in normal use. Lots of things to discuss with my local dealer, including what that tease of an F80 really is Cheers, Simon

Hi Simon - I guess it depends how many features you want and how much money you're willing to spend. From my point of view, I wanted an enjoyable sound, but my office is noisy so there's not much point being to obsessive about squeezing out every last drop of fidelity. As such, I'm not sure that the DSP3100s would give me a whole deal more:
Price - more expensive
Footprint - Wider (a consideration for a desktop!)
Remote control - not needed - you're not likely to be too far away from your keyboard and its possible to control volumes with both the PC and Squeezebox.
Fine tuning - the contents of my desk change on an hourly basis.
Sound Quality - If it gets any better I might be tempted never to answer the phone again!
Laptop - Get one and use it in the main system room!
Cheers Tom

Thanks Tom - that gives me some more things to consider, especially footprint and changing day-to-day clutter that could affect sound.
Recently, I've been on a mission to reduce noise in my little home office. The NAS has been banished to another room and the Windows PC rarely gets switched on anymore except when relaxing playing games. For normal use I find a Mac Mini is close to inaudible. And Hush Technologies make some great passive cooled PCs (silent except for a little drive noise) - I'm using one of their machines as my mail server.
Cheers, Simon
