I'm curious based on actual practice how often folks that actually own music server setups use their CD player to listen to music.
This includes SqueezeBox, Roku, AirPort Express, Straight Computer and any others for of Music Server.

George, Im not sure I follow the poll choices-you are asking about how often we still spin CDs but then the poll talks about DVDA- which most of us can't rip to a server. So I answered the 5%- still spin the DVDA. I would suggest a new poll which just asks how often you use a player of any kind and when you use it which discs are you using. With the DVDA of Love, you betcha I am spinning DVDAs!
best regards, Jerry

Jerry,
I understand your point but 2nd round polls often don't get the same turn out and fragment the results.
DVD-A was a last minute thought. I think the poll still accomplished the general statistical profile I was curious about.

Do remember that this is a self selecting group though. Music server enthusiasts are much more likely to read this thread than those with little or no interest server based solutions (who are still using spinners). There are 26 votes so far from a 'Hiker population of ~1600. (Similarly, I ignore most HD and Bluray threads, along with most of the Mac ones too). It's difficult to assume that because 92% of respondents have effectively sidelined their players, that this extrapolates to the market as a whole...it may well be the case, but we can't assume too much based on this one poll. Cheers Mr Methodology

No, you also need to consider the fraction that have moved over to music servers.
Which is increasing. CDs are just soooo old hat!

I agree with Mr. Meridian about these polls but I think George did not set out to make "THE" scientifically perfect poll- just more of a curiosity. I would submit that the people here are a pretty good indicator when it comes to servers vs. straight CD play because we here are more likely to make the effort to get the best sound quality- so when this group here is going to the convenience model- there is something to take note of. Of course, its because the servers produce great results sonically as well. The bottom line is for me if DVDAs were easily ripped to a server then I would listen to them this way as well. I take a very literal read to the thread/ poll title. In so far as spinning CDs at home, the answer is its so rare that I feel comfortable in saying it never happens. DVDAs are spun to get their sonic benefits- but they occupy probably 25% at most of my listening. Now its time to cast off the shackles of DRM! http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughtsonmusic best regards, Jerry

Now that I have ripped my DVD-As (at least the DTS/DA track, and in two cases the stereo MLP track, though downagraded to 48/24), I find that I am rarely tempted to spin those discs - convenience rules over quality.

Mr Methodology You have to compare the number of Vistors per day, not the number of register users. And of those that did visit who would bother to contribute to the poll. The point of the poll was, now that you have experienced a Music Server what is your listening style now. It's kind of hard to ask that of folks that don't have a Music Server setup.

I own a Kaleidescape and have ripped all my discs onto it. I thought I might have something of interest to add to this topic when it was about music servers. I don't think I can add much to the discussion about voting theory theory so am feeling a little intimidated. Too bad, as I'd really like to share how Kaleidescape has changed my listening habits.
