Harry:

MRC only does cuts, not boosts.

If the speaker size is set to max, I could see this as happening.

Cheers,

You can't set DSP's to Max (that I could see anyway). It's predefined what ever it does or it lets the speaker handle itself.

If you think listening to music is fun, try learning an instrument.

Adidadi,

Volume 92 is pretty heavy for a room your size.

Maybe your room is too absorptive ??

On the other end blowing a driver in a DSP speaker shouldn't happen. It's programmed to limit itself. Have you blown any replacement drivers ?

Vol set to 92 on five DSP5200s, in a smallish room and clearly music with a strong bass content! Ye gods, do you not have any neighbours? Isn't this dangerous to your long term hearing?

OK so 92 on one disc might not be as loud as 92 on another, and your room has been acoustically treated, but if you are blowing all these drivers, don't you wonder whether the problem lies elsewhere?

I have to agree with Michael here. 92 is very very loud. With all of M's speakers, you don't actually know how loud they are as you don't get the usual distortion clues that lesser equipment provides.

This is an interesting read...

Although some people like loud music, especially if they already have a hearing loss, most audiences note little perceptible difference between sound levels of 85 dB SPL and 100 dB SPL. However, 100 dB is much more dangerous than 85 dB sound, having 32 times more destructive power (115 dB sound found in many clubs has 1000 times more destructive power than 85 dB sound).
Now, using your 5 favourite 'loud' listening discs, what is the average spl at your listening position with the DSP's at 92?

My room is VERY absorbtive, with panels all around, carpet and couch. I also remember that the rear volume was very low when calibrating, so I had to bring the rest of the volume down low to match them, so maybe my 92 is not as loud as everyone elses? However, it really is not that loud for Dolby Digital movies. A lot of music is too loud at 88, but to hear the dialogue in movies clearly, I have to turn it up to 92 and it gets normal, then the explosions are room shaking.
Do the Velodynes have digital inputs that would work with the 861's Meridian digital sub out card? I would like to not have to buy another set of analog cards. I also am considering putting a couple of Revel 15" in, but I'd prefer a smaller driver for faster and tighter bass.

No digital inputs on the Velodyne subs but they have Balanced LFE inputs...

What you hear as "not so loud" is the acoustical power out of the speakers, but at 92 the electrical power out of the amps to the woofers are very high. Combine that with some clipping and you will easily blow a speaker although your ears are not considering to be to loud. Go for 2 subs is my advice. And have the room acoustics measured.

Adi,

I'm still curious about what dbs you do get when have a good loud session. I've quoted here before that the Foo's CD clocks 110+ at 85 on the M scale. That surprised me and have to say I don't do it much now as a result.

You should have kept the DSP8000 . Since I bought my 8ks I sold my Aerial subs. I play DD at 78 and 79 db that's where 8ks sounds their best. I use the 5200s for center and rear channels. I playback rebook CD at 65 db.

8000's did NOT work in my room: too much, uncontrollable bass.
I just crossed the 5200's over at 50hz and still have tremendous impact and bass (without subwoofer). Are we sure that the speakers are completely protected? Do I need to go higher to ensure damage doesn't occur?

Dbs on the Meridian speedgun depends on how the speakers are calibrated, if speakers are calibrated to levels lower than 75 , 63 in my case due to a large absorptive room, I play DD at 90-92 and music at 80-85 with 8000,s as L and R and 5500 as center.
What I can't understand is how the drivers get busted when a setting of MAX in the processor is supposed to provide full protection of DSP's
So far no blown drivers!!
Cheers,
Sandeep
