I've just upgraded to Focal.JMLab speakers and a new a Velodyne DD18 sub and I'd appreciate suggestions and help with the G68 Bass management setup.

The centre is rated to 35Hz, the fronts to 30Hz, the sides to 41Hz and the backs to 50Hz.

The manufacturer suggests they're all run as large and I like the sound running the speakers all as large.

My system is used 100% for HT.

Running all speakers as large (except the centre which is automatically set to small by the MRC program for TV Logic) I like Prologic IIx THX.

How would you recommend that the sub and the crossover points be set for the TV Logic and Multi channel movie room correction?

Thanks very much

80Hz
Otherwise the sub will not have so much effect and the relief of effect of the other speakers will not be effective. 80Hz is used quite often in home cinema setups.

Experiment! Even though your speakers can handle full range. You might get better bass running them set to small with the sub set to mono sub. I use two subs for below 80Hz. That works for me but experiment with the crossover frequency by changing the crossover frequency while listening to music. Strategic placement with one sub 180 degree out of phase. Much better articulate bass and I don't have room correction with my 568.2. Bass is very tight and fast top to bottom. Velodyne subs are very accurate subs. I had a ULD15 once. Its an older sub but man was that a good sub. I have Aerial SW12's now. Two of them! Enjoy but remember to experiment with different settings. You might be missing out on better bass response in your room. It doesn't hurt to try and you can always change it back. Create different setups as types and store them so you can retype and test different setups quickly.

Thanks, if I use different types can I still have the same speaker setup (I thought types are for different speaker configurations?)with just the crossover points being set differently and building different MRC profiles for each type?

If the above is correct then am I correct in assuming I could also have one type for the room with the door closed and one for the door open?

I never heard of this, MRC does not set sizes. It's perfectly ok to be small, but I don't think MRC set it that way.

Hi George

For a TV Logic setup MRC won't let me have a large centre and sub.

Either I'm doing something wrong or there's something I don't understand?

Please tell me your thoughts about the crossover points and also comment regarding the types suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

Your terminology is confusing. MRC does not set this restriction. Bass management does.

Basically for discrete formats if a speaker is full size it will not take it's bass away.

But in Logic (not just Tv-Logic though) any time the ceneter is derived (from 2 channels for any non music format e.g. Prologic, THX, PLII, TV-Logic) and not discrete it will send that bass to the sub.

I guess they figure they have some derived bass that could go anywhere so they assume the best place is the sub. I'm not sure why they restrict it or not allow you to override it.

Since there is no LFE in "2 channel logic" if it didn't route the center bass to the sub, the sub would not run at all.

If you look under Music Tab and switch the Bass Flow Diagram to 2-Channel (with 3 Large Fronts and Sub) the sub is not used at all. For some reason they do let you override center size on 2-Channel Music. I guess they assume you'd want the impact on the movie.

It's pretty clear to me that Darryl means MConfig.

Cheers,

Having multiple types can be any setup you want. Not just speaker setup but different crossover frequencies, different defaults for each preset. Its like having the ability to setup as if you had several different preamp/processors all in one chassis.

Thanks very much George, John and Ron and apologies for my confusing terminology (senior moments are becoming more frequent!).

As apart from defining types, the manuals and guides don't appear to have much info and instruction on types, where do I find info re setting up types with the same speaker configuration but different parameters and presets and also how to switch between types?

Thanks again

Ron,

I never used "types" (I assume you mean user presets). I'm not sure they even exist in the new Mconfig. I don't see anything for types or user presets in MConfig. I assume 861v4 and g68 are the same. 568.2 MConfig is very different.

Only types I know of is typing from front panel which gets overwritten with a confuration upload from MConfig.

I don't see anything that would allow different speaker layout at the touch of a button. That would impact MRC too.

George,

I'm sure I've seen a box to tick saying “Use types” somewhere in MConfig?

Regards
Darryl
