I thought the G06 was the replacement for the G07 and not the G08 so I would expect the G08 to continue being in the product line up.

Correct. The G08 is an upsampling CD player/transport. The G06 does not upsample.

However, what I don't get is if it doesn't upsample, how come the DACs are 192kHz?

As an owner I'd find it interesting to compare the G08 to a non upsampling player of similar design. That said living the noisy transport that is inherent to the design means I wouldn't buy either now if I had the choice.

Cheers,

Craig.

it has 192 DACs which are not utilised to their full potential/bandwidth.

it looks very sexy in specs and fulls a lot of consumers.
technically it might bring some minor sound improvements.

What do you mean "noisy transport"?

Twelve months after getting my G08 I noticed a whining noise when I played specific CD's. (Loud when reading the disc, then easing off to nothing after two or three tracks) It went back to the shop, they replaced the transport and the noise was gone. Twelve months later the same thing happened again - the whine, not the replacement of the transport. By this time the local importer (I'm in Australia) had been advised by Meridian that they know the transport is noisy on certain discs (I don't know if it's a balance issue with discs not quite centered or what) but as the transport otherwise sounds fine then they weren't going to do anything about it. I sit about 3.5 metres from the player and it's loud enough to be heard over quiet patches in the music on the discs that are a problem. I believe that if I burnt a copy of the disc then I may get around the problem. This is not satisfactory to me on what is not a cheap player.

Cheers,

Craig.

as the owner of a 508.24 I would be interested in comments on the respective sound improvements of a) a G08 and b) the new G06. My amp is an Exposure 3010 and the speakers are Heybrook Sextets.

Although I auditioned the G08 it was not using my amp or speakers and I did not think that the results really justified the expense of the change. But I would be interested in members views.
Thanks

Craig,

i had transport noise problem on my 588.
it was more like disc vibaration inside.
i felt that it was like disk wasn't clamped good enough.
i hear this sometimes in computer CD-ROMs.

i just made a thin mat from plastic (transparent slides for printer work OK) and put it on top of the discs.
this is eliminated problem completely.
before i sold 588 i replaced the transport with a new one - which obviously solved the problem.

so you can try such a mat or try one of those audiophile mats.

the only thing is that when i started to use the mat for the "noisy" disks i've got an impressions that clamping became ever weaker and thus more discs required the mat - but i'm not sure whether this feeling is a correct one.

Gennady

i owned 588 and heard 508.24 in another system.
i think that 588 was better.

G-08 is big improvement over 588.

so it seems to me that 508.24 and G-08 gap should be substantial.

but for this kind of money i would demand a hoem audition - after all this is one of the prime reasons why dealer deserves to earn his margin.

Thanks for the suggestion Gennady. It does strike me that I shouldn't have to be messing around with this stuff on a player that isn't from the bargain basement. Also, what bothers me is that initially the transports have been silent, which indicates to me that something in the transport is either broken or out of alignment or just worn. Again, I don't think this should happen in this player. At this point I'm looking at possibly moving out of Meridian because of this. Time will tell.

Cheers,

Craig.
