I'm looking at setting up 5.1 Meridian system for home theater and music which will probably use DSP7000 as front speakers and the 861 as a processor.

Now, I'm very lazy in changing CD's, and would rather have the music all stored digitally. I'm hooking up a Sonos Digital Music Server system for the rest of the house, and was warming to the idea to also hook it up to the 861/DSP7000s.

Has anyone done this? Any idea what quality I would get. Thanks.

I'll be very interested to hear the results. I have a Sonos ZP100 as my "background" system in the living room, but soon hope to install a ZP80 connected digitally to my 568.2 in the family room and plan to test it thoroughly against my 596 as a source device - stay tuned...

It depends on the end quality you are looking for. If you are using 7000's with a 861, you obviously appreciate the finer things in life. If you have a bit of $$$ to spare, there are some pretty inovative solutions coming onto the market that use TCP/IP as the standard protocol and look to blow the Sonos away - admittedley for considerably more $$$.

If you are interested, check out www.netstreams.com. You can hook up a single zone Escient, ReQuest or Imerge audio server and stream up to 6 zones through the single ethernet connection. If you use a touchscreen, you can also get 2 way communication. The benefit of this system, is it is all open architecture, easily expandable for the future and you can integrate into your smart lighting, security, HVAC, etc. I believe the marketing term for the moment is 'convergance'.

If you want to spend a few $$$ less, but like the idea of using an open protocol, also check out http://www.coloradovnet.com/home/default.aspx. You can also integrate audio and lighting with this solution.

Perhaps a little more than either of you are looking at, but life is all about options
