I've been living with occasional audio dropouts from OTA HD broadcasts for a long time. I lived with it partly because it was a very early generation tuner (first Sony HD TV)and just thought it was the best it could do.

Now I have a new TV and DVR and they both still get audio drop outs. But if I use the internal speakers on the TV it's fine, no dropouts. This was true on the old TV as well (internal speakers works).

So I thought it must be something to do with optical input on the Meridian. But I've had 3 meridians 561, 568 and 861 and they all had the problem. I've tried 5 different cables. Short ones and long ones.

I even tried running optical into my DVDO and outputing over coax. Still have the problem.

I can now get the local broadcasts over cable (QAM Tuner) and still have drop outs.

What's going on?

George,

I don't have dropout issues with Dolby Digital with OTA HD unless I get a visible picture distortion as well either in the form of pixelation or other breakups.

I've used a Dish6000, Dish811 and Dish211 into the 568.2MN, 861 and G68 with the same results.

Wish I had a better answer but at this point in time, I don't.

Cheers,

George,

In the source setup configuration, have you tried setting the "Poor Digital audio source - frequency out of range" option under the Advanced Tab?

No, I'll give that a try.

This is an excellent suggestion, can't wait to hear the results.

Thanks

Goerge,

Is this occurring during the middle of a show or when there is a transition between commercials and the regular broadcast? My G68 seeems to have a short audio dropout when the HD broadcast resumes. The only explanation that I can come up with is that the commercials are not broadcast in DD and when there is a transition back to a DD signal, it takes the processor just a second to lock back on the signal. Maybe there is another explanation, but that seems to make sense to me.

I know what your talking about when it switches back and forth between HD and SD commercials you get burps etc. But that's not what I'm referring to.

It's right in the middle of the show and there appears to be no pixelation glitches associated with it. It even occurs on DVR recorded stuff and if I backup and play the same seqment again it won't repeat.

I think the "poor audio source" might be the key. I'm hoping. The FIFO assumes a clean signal. I suspect if you get a minor glitch in the stream the FIFO might have to flush and interrupt audio longer. But if the FIFO is off it may be able to recover without listener noticing it. This may explain why the TV internally works as it does not have such an exotic FIFO. It also probably explains why Meridian had to make it an option.
