Hey I'm looking to add a Meridian sub to my system. I currently have G68, G98, DSP 5200 & DSP 5200c. Anyone currently using a Meridian sub and have any recommendations, reviews..any ideas? I'm also looking to add DSP to the rears. Is it necessary to have the same DSP 5200 for the rears? Thanks

Hi there,
Are you dead set on an M sub? They are good but not as good as some analogue subs on the market from say, Velodyne, REL et al.
With regards to the 5200's - if you can afford them - buy them for rears. I would probably spend my money on a set of 5ks or 3100's an use the change for DVD's and CD's.
The general consensus seems to be that for Hi Rez music, matching speakers are/is the way forward.
Why not just get a demo and see what you reckon?

I would have thought that 3100s (which apparently are tonally very similar to the 5200s) would be more than adequate as rears unless you are planning a lot of 5.1 discrete listening (i.e. DVD-A), though even then I would have thought that the front 5200s could still cope easily with the redirected bass. You'll also have an additional 3.5k in change...
Regarding subs, I believe the new generation of M subs are a substantial improvement over the previous (1500 and 2500) models.

You need to decide the key priority in your system. If (like me) you mainly use your kit for movies then the 3100s plus a 5500 sub would probably be the best utilisation of your budget.
If you heavily use multi-channel music then an all balanced 5200 set-up would probably be a better move. Of course if you change your preferences later you can always add a sub later. Your 5200 investment will not be in vain.
These are nice decisions to take. Do post your decision, it's good to see how fellow enthusiasts develop their systems.

the new M- subs sw5500 and sw1600 are excellent and much improved from the previous M- subs; I would recommend them (presently have a sw5500) with 5200s in front; excellent voice match and more than enough punch;
I haven't heard the 3100 except a quick demo at CEDIA (poor acoustics), but they handled it very well - I liked them a lot. I use 5Ks as surrounds for 5200s; they are a good match and are full range for the music surround.
Although, I don't find many mixes of either music or movies that actually send full range to the surrounds; going forward, I think this will be done more and more, but realistically I think if you had a second sub in the rear and use a 3100, it would be equivalent - perhaps better; I'm not convinced that for the small amount of surround-bass that gets mixed is particularly directional, even when present;
just some rambling thoughts-
