Evening all,

I'm a relatively new owner of some G series gear (G98 / G68J - thanks Nick!), bought primarily because of the room correction facility. Technical performance has been faultless throughout although I have been slightly disappointing acoustically. Having said that, the new, more forward / dynamic presentation of the G series is a huge improvement for me (each to their own) over the 500 series.

I use a satellite receiver for my radio, works very well.

I could make further progress by modding the G68 to provide a "proper" analogue power supply for the analogue outputs (Jung superregs rather than a computer switch mode) but the relatively poor second hand values for a mint unit are deterring me from opening the lid. A Scanspeak tweeter mod on my M33's should keep me busy for a little while over Xmas and bring them up to a performance level they should have had in the first place - fancy using a 20 tweeter designed for the automotive industry...

I'm a little worried about the potential lack of upgrades - the 1080p output would be very nice along with a 1080i input on the G98. In theory with the unit being constructed in a modular way I would have thought M would be keen exploit the upgrade bug.

I must confess, having seen the prices of the the 861 upgrades, I'm not sure if I could justify further significant investment in a system that can only ever sound 98% OK with its present architecture. IMHO Meridian seem to be hot on digital but relatively poor with analogue.

UK Tech support is superb - sorry to hear that you don't enjoy the same across the pond.

Merry Xmas all xxx

Good deal Chris! My 596 & 518 works great too. My 568.2 is perfect since 2.5 beta. Just my 598 that isn't so hot all the time. To bad the bugs take years to fix.

Happy Holidays!

Further information from around the world on the future of DAB....

Sweden's Minister for Culture has turned down Swedish Radio's request for additional investment for DAB, citing the format as being too expensive. So, Finland has switched off DAB, the five largest French radio broadcasters have all rejected using DAB because it is outdated and inefficient (originally it was just the four largest radio broadcasters, but the fifth-largest is participating in a trial of digital radio via DVB-H now as well), the Australian minister for communications said it would be "irresponsible" to use DAB because it is out-of-date and will soon be replaced by a new DAB version 2 standard and Canada have effectively sidelined DAB to being a minor system after they licensed two satellite digital radio systems.

It's not looking very good for the DAB system. It is for good reason that countries are turning their back on it; the system is now 15 years old and is outclassed by the modern digital broadcasting systems that can carry digital radio, such as DVB-H, DRM+ and DMB, as well as satellite digital radio and the US-based MediaFLO system.

The WorldDAB Forum needs to release the DAB version 2 standards as soon as possible, because otherwise more and more countries will turn their backs on the DAB system altogether, and if it's not careful WorldDAB will have to be renamed something along the lines of the "UK & Denmark DAB Forum".

What about an alternative.....

A Director-General of Radio Satellite Viatis, which is a subsidiary of satellite digital radio company WorldSpace, has said that the European satellite digital radio (ESDR) system could be launched as early as late-2007.

The system plans to provide about 50 advert-free digital radio stations to language-specific regions, i.e. 50 stations in English targeted at the UK and Ireland, and 50 stations in German to German-speaking companies, and so on.

The system will be modelled on the highly successful satellite digital radio systems in the US, which are expected to have 9 million subscribers by the end of 2005.

Surely all this is enough reason for Meridian to produce a card-based 'radio' tuner that takes advantage of such emerging media formats.

Spinaltap,

Given M's current stance on HDMI I think it's much more likely they will wait until a successful radio format has emerged and produce something then. I think it has become too costly to try and lead the way in today's uncertain climate, especially in an area which M don't particularly specialise in.

Just my two penneth.

Simon

Presumably, once you get a software driven tuner that can decode digital signals at various frequencies, the changes of future formats being accessed via the same hardware becomes more likely.

So hopefully the current DAB solution can be extended in software to handled other formats.

Well, I reckon the nearest car company analogy to Meridian is Aston Martin.

- "British" design and build
- Looks fantastic
- Performs excellently
- Lots of niggling faults when released
- Uses early customers as development engineers
- Issues software upgrades to correct issues (DB9 now at Version 10)
- Has knowledgeable and critical customer base
- Works Service is excellent.

Malcolm, You have honed my analogy to perfection, I thank you.

I dont want the BMW Drug dealer body kit on my Hi Fi. ha Ha !!

You would forgive Aston Martin almost anything.

Welcome to the club, Chris smile
