The VPL-VW100 is demoed in a non-Sony store in Stockholm at the moment, I don't think they would do that if they are not going to be able to sell it...

I haven't written any reviews on any projectors. I don't have the skills to do so.

I saw the Sony VPL-VW100 today.. Demoed with Bluray 1080i HD..
Ohhh my... I'm in love! Like a 9" LC CRT but with great focus and quiet. For 10k it's a steal.

I have seen the Meridian/Faroudja shortly. Was projected on a reasonable big screen (2,5 metres wide) as back projection. The picture was not easy to judge here. They played upscaled DVD which was not the best way to show such a product.
The Sony VPL-VW100 i have seen demo'd with HD and the viewing conditions were better. Since that is only 1/3 of the price it seems more attractive to me.

Saster,
Just out of curiosity, did they feed the signal directly into the projector or did they use an outboard scaler? I was under the assumption that Blu-ray was going to output a 1080p signal. Glad to hear that you were as smitten as I was when I saw the Sony Qualia.

RLiddel:
The VPL-VW100 is not the Qualia 004. The VPL-VW100 is the Ruby which was introduced at CEDIA 2005. In almost every way, it outperforms the Qualia at 1/3 the asking price.
Cheers,

John,
I am aware that the VW-100 is an exciting three-chip altenative to the high priced DLP offerings and Sony's own Qualia, my question was a basic one. Did they feed the signal into the Ruby through an outboard processor or directly into the projector? If they used an outboard processor, what did they use?

I can't speak to what Saster saw, but according to Greg Rogers the Ruby's internal scaler is very good quality.
Not quite the level of the best outboard scalers, but not chopped liver either.

The ruby i saw had a very strange video feed: Laptop PC with firewire out into a JVC DCinema. Than analogue component into a Denon 3805 and from there HDMI to the Ruby. They played .TS files and also a Tape on the JVC. Prices of the Faroundja projector: http://www.viertron.nl/pdf/Faroudja.pdf

Thanks for the link. According to xe.com that works out at 18,315 for dila 1080 and the 1080 scaler. That's about 5k more than you would pay for the plain vanilla JVC if you shopped around (and again probably with even greater savings to be had in the US). But for that you do get the William Phelps treatment, a later gen scaler and, not to be sniffed at, M's wonderful customer support. That's almost reasonable.
