Hi there

I have a Meridian 558.2 and have a question concerining speaker cable connection to the amplifier.

When connecting using bi-wired speaker cable there is not enough room for me to connect all four banana plugs. Three of them fit with no problem but on the fourth there is not enough room due to the unbalanced phono socket being in the way.

How do fellow hitchikers overcome this problem?

At present I connect the fourth connection using bare wire.

Regards Phil..

Perhaps you could reterminate your speaker cables with spade connectors.

Looking at the diagram in the 558 handbook, I would have thought the banana plugs would have to be pretty huge to foul the phono socket.

Hi Mark

I received this reply from Meridian.

The 558 has plastic
bungs in the ends of the terminals. These can be removed by partially
screwing in a self tapping screw then pulling out. It is then possible to
connect your banana plugs into the ends of the terminal.

Best regards

I did not realise the plastic bungs could be removed allowing the banana plugs to be fitted into the ends of the terminal.

Good luck getting the bungs out.

It took me two hours on my Nautilus 802s.

Too small a self-tapper and it pulls out leaving a mess, too large and it locks in place. I eventually did it VERY CAREFULLY with a Swiss army knife corkscrew.

I believe it is only the Swedes who power their speakers directly from the mains :-).

Hello all

I managed to remove the bungs with a small screw driver.

Did not notice any mention of these bungs in the manual. Would have saved me a lot of trouble if they had mentioned them.
