It seems like a good investment to ensure high quality burning; especially after buying Meridian. So I have 2 questions, and appreciate all of the response on my Quality Cable Posting, still a bit confusing to me.

1- What is best CD burner - Looking at top of the line LaCie with Lightscribe for disk labelling and Toast 7 software for disk burning.

2- What is best blank media - looking at Verbatim 52x/CD-R

Any suggestions/Thanks Stu

IMHO I wouldn't waste my money on a Lightscribe CDR - I lost the will to live waiting for a friend's to image a disc label.

Cheers

Mark

Ok, now that was funny! This reply had to wait until I picked myself back up off the floor.

Happy Trails!

Hi Stugomer,

quality-wise, at least some time ago Plextor was considered the best.

It certainly isn't the least expensive you can find, and I'm pretty sure none of their products support LightScribe yet. I have owned a couple Plextor drives in the past, they have been very reliable and fast, and their support has been excellent. Constant firmware-upgrades for example. But my experiences are mainly from 2-3 ago, things might have changed.

I have been looking at their external, slot loading model, the PX-716UFL. I like that it has 8 MB of buffer, for example. A shame it's not SATA-connected. I'd use it mainly for ripping my CDs to a HDD-RAID and sometimes for making backups to DVDs. I know that I wouldn't probably need such an expensive drive to simply rip the data off the discs but I just think that exactly that stage of ripping has to proceed as well and with as few errors as possible, so I'll probably continue putting my trust on Plextor. Link here:

Their newest and fastest is the PX-760A/SA. 2 MB buffer only. Link (the SATA-connected SA-model) here:

But you might want to check these, too:

Hi Stu

The last reviews on CDRs for music use which I read was couple of years ago (HiFi Choice I think). TDK CD-RXG came out on top for best sound, but I can't remember which others (about 6 of them) were reviewed. I've been buying those since then and been happy with the results, but to be honest, I don't apply the same criteria as I would a CD...its still a copy after all.

When t' missus needed a CD burner for her laptop a few years ago, it was a Plextor external unit which I bought (and paid hansomely for!) due to it's low jitter figures when making audio copies. I'm not sure what the modern equivalent would be, but this was sold as a premium model at the time.

Cheers

George
