Thanks John.

Meridian are beginning to sound like they have employed Tony Blair as their spokesman. Answers the questions without actually saying much of interest.

Just see the answer to question 7. It responds but fails to address the actual point of having manually customisable resolutions.

Ah well ....

John,

thanks for the great work.

The answer to Question 20 is slightly puzzling. The dsp6000 data sheet states they will do 192khz via software updates. Are they now saying this isn't the case? Any idea which DSP speakers will be upgradable? I know this is rather academic now but we can live in hope for the future.

regards

Chris

Chris,

It's going to be a wait and see. I think there will be more than just software involved.

It's no problem, remember I get to sit down and talk to Bob and Duncan which is a lot of fun for me.

There's a big payback for the time I spend laugh

John-
thanks so much for an excellent session;

love Meridian gear and sound, but thank god the artists that we listen to through it are a bit more.... shall we say 'in tune'...

Kind of interesting round of logic follows:
1) sacd is too dead for our M- customers for us to spend support money on (digital connects) ;
but DVD-A isn't dead enough that our M- customers should invest in only M- players to get it digitally.

2) HDMI digital path connects aren't interesting enough to our M- customers ;
but DVD-A all digital paths are what separates M- from all others providers.

3) 24/192 sources aren't prevalent enough... ;
but M- customers love our investment in 24/192 speakers and upscaling.

I'm being a bit curse, but clearly M- could use a some logic extreme makover here; even if only to keep the marketing stories connected together;

Ken:

On #1:
There's nothing they can do with SA-CD except convert it to PCM. They already can do a very good A/D conversion to get it to PCM with IA45 @ 96K. If you want a digital connection, get the DVD Upgrades modification which inputs a PCM signal.

Take this to the bank, Meridian will never accept a native DSD signal. There is no provision in either High Definition Optical disc format giving M even less inclination to provide a means to do so.

On #2:
Try reading their response this way:

M would rather give you a complete solution that includes all of the supported formats for Blu-ray and HD-DVD than have you upgrade twice in a relatively short time span. They are a small manufacturer and they won't be first on the market with HD-DVD or Blu-ray solutions. They weren't with DVD-A either but when they did provide a DVD-A solution it was the most advanced solution around.

On #3:
This is just my opinion... I think that it ties in with #2, and you'll see 24/192K digital delivery to speakers roll out with #2s solution.

Added on edit
The 24/192K capability listed on the speakers is almost certainly the DACs. Probably a production changeover to all Analog Devices AD1852s for simplified production instead of having to support multiple DACs.

Cheers,

John-
All good points and well taken; then I think it will be a couple of years before we see a Meridian all digital solution for HD multichannel; It will likely take that long to get significant content anyway;

In the meantime, I think I will go the DVD upgrades route rather than the G98, which would have to be replaced then anyway;

I hope when the HDMI solution is realized, we don't all have to replace our G68 processors....

thanks for all your efforts - extremely helpful

It's good to hear that interlaced out on HDMI will be possible. When I wonder...?

I was disappointed at the response re having custom output resolutions - M must know that a great many consumer display devices including many/most? plasmas do not report the panel resolution properly via EDID. How difficult is enabling custom outputs? Or at least supporting some standard plasma resolutions?

John, thanks very much for all your efforts to compile & answer our questions - I can't imagine it done better.

Paul.

I just posted a poll to see how common incorrect/incomplete EDID information is.

Thanks for your efforts John - very informative.

16) Is it possible to provide a software upgrade to activate upsampling in the “stereo” mode of “type 6” of the G91 to avoid having to reset and retype everytime you want to go from multichannel to upsampled stereo?
Admitedly it's not automatic but you don't need to re-type: changing the setting in the audio setup/application menu should switch between up-sampled stereo and surround.

Ed.

Did we forget to ask if it was possible to have 720p or 1080i from G9x component outputs?
