As I mentioned last year, for the same round table of questions for M, will M provide HDMI v1.2 compliant machines? can current owners upgrade so that we "could" use the HDMI connector to carry the high resolution digital audio signal to the processor (g68/861)? 192/24 anybody? M answer was not just yet for the last few years....
with HDMI 8Ch @192/24 I'm sure will satisfy everybody for the next 10 years...

John,

I am particularly interested in Meridian's plans for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray support and whether they have thrown their hat into one of the rings or plan to wait until one format triumphs (or both fail!).

Right now it looks like my 800 is about to become sidelined as I will need to switch to non-Meridian hardware to access this material.

It would be good to have multiple sub support with 7.1 config.
obviously also multiple crossover points

Hi John,

Given the news on the external HDMI input device it seems unlikely an internal upgrade is on the cards but it would still be nice to ask, as if this functionality could be integrated into the existing M products with scalers and smartlink outputs, G91/98/800 for example, then the audio and video routing could all be dealt with via the HDMI input feed and sent out accordingly.

Alternatively, how to M propose to deal with the audio feed from the HDMI output of external sources. Remaining with using a coax in would work, providing the sources can stream audio and video via different outputs, but it would be nice to know they are planning to accept an HDMI audio feed for future proofing - ie. there maybe only limited audio choice through standard coax connections.

I`m no expert and my worries here could be completely unfounded, but they are worries and if relevant would like them raised.

Cheers

Simon

I know this is greedy but I fancy a 2 output HDMI switcher so I can switch between the plasma for Sunday afternoon formula one and football to a projector for an evening movie. So any upgrades available for the HDMax? Of course separate audio routing is required for input to the 861.

As I don't yet have a projector that's not a major concern but I'd like it to be a problem solved soon. Even the external scalors don't seem to have this one licked yet. But maybe I've missed something.

Chris, you're not being greedy at all. I've a component feed to my PJ and have been wondering how I'd deal with adding a plasma... A plasma (or other smaller TV) + a PJ is not an uncommon state of affairs.

There are some hard disk based systems which legally copy DVD movies and CD music (full quality) and you can then just select from a menu one of the movies or CD to watch/listen to. The data is stored encrypted on the disks, so no one can remove a disc and copy from it (sort of a moot point with current DVD copy situation, but Bluray/HD-DVD will get much better encryption). Of course DVD-A should also be possible to store on the HD.

Meridian should make one such system, only with Meridian-quality sound - and better picture quality...

One more for you John,...sorry,

I believe some time ago it was brought up on the forum that it would be nice to see the bit rate on the display of players as well as the sampling rate.

I don't own DSP's but think this info is provided on the speaker displays so it should be relatively easy to implement on the player displays. Could this be raised please.

Many Thanks

Simon

Although this falls firmly into the category of future products (and therefore tight-lipped-ness), do Meridian have any plans to add network media player capabilities to the G or 800 series?

Specifically:

Uncompressed WAV + other lossless formats.
Ethernet and wireless.
Possibly to the SlimServer standard, but if not some client/server management software.

There must be hundreds of us out there with home networks who have invested a lot of time with quality ripping (e.g. EAC), who would love a Meridian solution in this area, but who do NOT want a Meridian hard disc player.

Oh yes...now that could really go somewhere. An upgradable firmware Slimplayer on an 8xx card with an Ethernet port...

Wouldn't it have to go in the 800 rather than the 861 though, then it could interact with the remote properly for playback control ?

Regards

Mark
