It is truly a terrible tragedy and I hope the perpetrators will be caught. I hope it doesnt disrupt the G8 talks which have the power to do so much good. I also hope that it doesnt act as a precursor to race violence as the unthinking scum in the UK seek revenge against anyone with a brown face.......and the politicians had better not use it as an excuse to perpetuate pumping troops into Iraq.
SNS, You are so right. I can just imagine Fox news drooling with a sensational gleam pointing out how we need to attack, even though that is the root of the cause. This neo con plan of hitting the hornets nest to get rid of it was clearly forwarned. The poor people of Britain, Spain, Bulgaria and Italy never really wanted this. Rome and Sofia may eventually take their "Welcome to the party" hits too. Deepest condolences to the families.
And I'm starting to think that a highly commendable post of sympathy and support for people, their friends and relatives living in London is being hijacked by conspiracy minded, anti-Bush and anti- American do-gooders and that it should be closed by a moderator.
Obviously a nerve has be struck and it has the potential to become more devisive than the "do cables make a difference" thread. I certainly extend my sympathies to all affected; nevertheless, I second Darryl's suggestion that the thread be closed so that the comradary of the forum not be jeopardized by political differences.
Just a note that I am half Italian, half American and grew up in London and now live in Los Angeles. I think a few of us here are EXTREMELY upset in addition to deeply sadenned by this event, since we are able to see through the marketing campaign of propaganda for this maneuver to establish a long term US presence in the Middle East. We also see that this plan to go shake up the hornets nest has GUARANTEED a generation of attacks in the western world for us and our children to deal with. Case in point; to support my statement regarding Rome paying its dues; my father in London e-mailed an article with this quote: An Internet statement from another group, calling itself the "Organization of al Qaeda - Jihad in the Arabian Peninsula" praised the attacks and said Rome would be targeted next. I don't see any posts here that do not have the deepest sympathy for the victims. I do see an attempt to silence any voiced opposition using the old "Anti American" hammer so prevalent in this country after 9-11-01. That attempt to restrict freedom of speech is in and of itself contrary to the founding principal of this country. And since so much has already been said, I think one piece of general misinformation should be clarified; contrary to what the neo-cons say; the Islamic extremists never attacked us for our way of life and freedom, they just want it out of their "Holy Land". That is what is NOT explained to the American public who think they are at risk regardless of our presence there. And for Britain to be lead into feeling they were threatened even though no Islamic terrorist attack had ever occurred in the UK, only to fall into the pitfall that spurred the first attack in UK history is very distressing. People sharing these emotions on a forum is clearly in step with a post labelled London Blasts. It is off topic to Meridian, but relevant to most.
