How does your the Diretta, compare to a CD? been listing more to the 808v6(id41) and G08(218-LPS), as they sound cleaner then streaming. Pretty sure this is all due to timing and noise

My 598 and Oppo machines are sitting idle these days because I’ve ripped the discs that aren’t available through streaming services, and prefer the convenience of file playback. Lazy.

For the benefit of those who clearly didn't read any of the featured links... The significance of the sMS-200 comes from the dedicated ARM processor board developed specifically for audio. It is not like the many ready-made processor boards in the market offered with dazzling low price but not very high sound quality, due to which many audio product manufacturers experience deterioration of sound and are forced to use unnecessary features from their boards. Not so with the sMS-200.
SOtM developed this with audio sound performance at the forefront, getting rid of all unnecessary features and concentrating on a high quality sound tone for a reasonable price.
The sMS-200 is carefully designed to provide the best sound quality based on our own unique technologies built up since the days of media players, and it is probably the only one capable of exceeding the current network players on the market in terms of functionality.
As to the player software, Roon Ready, MPD, DLNA, SqueezeLite and others are available as well as music files from an external USB storage device, network shared folders and streaming. And more functions can be easily added via software upgrade. OK, it's a streamer.

No, it's a Network Audio Bridge (with Diretta included).

Close enough. Not sure where it come into Diretta though, it has the software inside but apart from that they are little computers? My understanding is that it's Diretta that makes the difference, not individual boards or trickery, Diretta is doing the work, isolating from the network etc.

No, it's a Network Audio Bridge (with Diretta included). Not completely obvious from the description!

That's why I originally included links for a more comprehensive explanation, if you had taken the time to read them.

Per OldDogcan’s reply….. yes…it appears as a zone in Roon in the normal way. One other query. How is volume controlled in this scenario, does Roon volume control still work, or is it a case of using the MSR to do volume via the DSP speaker.

How does your the Diretta, compare to a CD? been listing more to the 808v6(id41) This is the question that has been on my mind for a while. Back in the Sooloos days and the incremental performance gains that were coming out of M with the development of the ID40 then ID41, and for a while the 818 used to sound better than the 808 until it stabilised with the 808.6, I used to often compare the CD playback and the same ripped FLAC file via Sooloos and I genuinely couldn’t really tell the difference. I’m wondering now if with all the streaming tweaks available, it’s possible that a streamer may outperform my 808.6 Interesting times

Diretta is supported by distros AudioLinux and GentooPlayer. Which is better? Both are inexpensive ways to tinker and possibly make a real difference. AudioLinux has the benefit of David Snyder's how-to docs and scripts. GentooPlayer has the benefit of a web UI that aims to make setup easy, (maybe).

I think the question of how it compares to CD is actually very relevant.
I was explaining the new Diretta project to my brother last week. He patiently listened and then asked whether the recent years of streaming and maybe even specifically with Roon have degraded performance.
I do think that is worth thinking about.
He said “so you’ve implemented something to get computer noise and network noise out of your system….. just like to had it when you played CD’s”
Fair question.
There are countless threads on the Roon forum that say that the SQ is not as good as either HQP, native Tidal apps etc. I have always ignored them as “bits are bits”, ID41 must be apex device, streaming cannot be doing anything to harm etc etc. and there are 1000’s of people arguing about it so let’s not go down that hole too far here.
But I now find myself rethinking all that. The Diretta combo of pi’s does definitely outperform the ID41 (to my ears). So maybe there is something going on that can be addressed.
What do you think ?
Rgds, Nick

I am a bit ambivalent about solutions like this and their results, could it not be the sound is now more to your liking as opposed to the id41 with active Meridian speakers? These solutions often have their own filters which can significantly change the sound. HQplayer is also such an example and we also know about the third party software which could be loaded into Meridian equipment with different filters. With all these solutions I always wonder how close the performance is still to the original.
