Hi, I am trying to refinish the covers of my 101/105 combo but having great difficulty matching original colour.
Does anyone know the colour? RAL CMYK or an automotive paint that is very close?

A good (car) paint store has a spectrophotometer which can produce the collorcode.

Hi Rick, thank you for the reply. I have tried that avenue, but unfortunately the machines are set up for gloss/ smooth paint finishes (cars). The store was unable to get a reading from the matt textured surface of the 101.

I have not seen one of the 1 series in person but the pictures of it remind me of my Revox's "Nextel" paint. There are threads on other forums about the Nextel paints if you want to do some searching for that term. Shot in the dark, but may help.

Hi,

The Meridian Component system used "Nextel" as a finish, more of a suede finish, than the harder finish on the 100 series.

If they are realy ugly. You could spray one with a glossy laquer or perhaps wet it with some water and try another measurement, although my experience is that they can measure matt paint. At least the photospectrummeter we used 20jrs ago could also measure matt finish. But that was in a normal diy paintstore. The meter was from Akzo Nobel

Nextel becomes junk after years. It gets sticky damages quickly and discolors. Used on some Quad's, Revox etc. Amazingly its still used in cars and on remote controls etc. So is the 100 are sticky the chances are that its nextel

The 100 series is definately a paint finish not the Nextel like the Component Series (which I had and regret selling lol)
My problem is the 101 preamp is near mint and I would not like to do anything to damage its finish, my pair of 105s have been resprayed a number of times by various owners - none the correct colour.

Hi, The paint finish was so bad, prone to chippping, that Meridian supplied its dealers with small pots of touch up paint!

What I don't know is if Meridian specified an etch primer to ensure adhesion of the finish coat. If an etch coat is not used then adherence is poor.

If you do find a match, then ensure an etch primer is applied first.

Perhaps ask Meridian, or a knowledgable dealer. There must be a record somewhere, especially if touch-up pots used to be supplied!

Hi, In your dreams, but seriously, this information I have dates back to the early 70's, so over 50 years ago.

Regards I

If you want to match the 105's to the 101 without respraying the 101, you could also go to a good paintstore and ask them if you can use their colorsample's (don't know the exact phrase in English) and try to find the best optical match to the 101. A good shop will have thousends and thousends of colors. It will never be a 100% match but very likely neither will the original color due to discoloration of the 101 after al those years. And then there is the re spraying technique and very probably some very slight differences in batches of paint. The amount of gloss will probably also differ.

Perhaps a car restorer can help. They can probably handmix the paint but that will probably have a price tag
