Wondering if any of the networking gurus on here could help me with something.

I have a NAS (Synology) I use for backing up Roon, among other things. Trouble is, every time I turn the power to the networking components off the IP address gets changed, so that I have to go back into Roon and redo it all for backups, etc., to run again.

I have very pitiful networking knowledge - I Googled it and opinions seem to vary between assigning the NAS a static IP, or setting up a DHCP reservation. Are either of these better than the other? Any issues I should be aware of before attempting either one?

No guru here either, however St. Edd did put my Sooloos on static addresses to make it more stable / findable.
The only issue recently was changing broadband supplier’s and the new router wouldn’t find the static addresses obviously so had to revert back to DHCP as I’m unsure how to do the static addresses.

Hi,

I'm not a fan of using Static IP (where the IP is manually configured on the device itself), it can work however, you must manually ensure (and document):
- The IP address is unique
- It is outside of the DHCP pool that the router can select from (to avoid IP conflicts with DHCP assigned IPs).
- If the device is connected to a LAN that has a different subnet access is not possible (eg. a new router or different location).

DHCP Reservation, this is my prefered option:
- The IP address is maintained automatically by the router
- It is always unique
- If the device is connected to a LAN that has a different subnet access is still possible as the new router will assign it a correct IP.

The end result of either method is the same: The IP used by the device will be consistent.

Thank you - this is exactly the advice I needed.

Will do battle with my ISP supplied router later, hoping it has this facility.

Is there any mileage in doing the same for Roon core (ROCK on a NUC) and ID40 card in 861? Normally this works OK with dynamic IP, but occasionally it has a little trouble finding the ID40 when 861 gets switched off/on.

So I've just tried to do this in the router config. I've entered the MAC address for the NAS into the Static DHCP Entry screen. However, there is an IPv4 field as well, and when I try to enter only the MAC address and leave the IPv4 field blank, I get the error message:

"Please input available bind IP address"

Any idea what I should do with that? The router tells me the current DHCP assigned IPv4 address, which I could enter here, but I thought the idea of doing things this way was to not assign a static IP...?

Oh sorry, I think I misunderstood what this does. Got my head around it now - it's telling the router that I want to always assign this IP to this device (MAC), rather than giving the device itself a static IP.
So I still have to enter an IP address I want the device to always be assigned by the router.

I set this up a few days ago and thought it was all working OK.

Then my Oppo started having issues not connecting to the network.

I just looked into this and found that it was trying to use one of the reserved IPs I had set for another device (none had been set for the Oppo).

Not sure how this can happen, as I thought the point of reserving an IP was that it would only be used on the device who's MAC address is stored against it?

One thought: is it a coincidence that the IP address for my BDP-105 ends in .105? I.e. did Oppo set a static IP ending in 105, or something??

Otherwise, anything else I can do to troubleshoot this?

I've temporarily set the Oppo to the 105 reserved address and will see if that helps...

Make sure you reserve static IP's OUTSIDE of the range that your DHCP server is allocating.

I haven’t, to my knowledge, allocated a static IP to anything.

I was trying to reserve IP addresses in the router, in the hope this would avoid static IP.

Do these still have to be outside the range of DHCP, then?

I was surprised the Oppo was using an IP I had previously reserved for my NAS, which has a different MAC address…
