It is so old it has round buttons.

I saw this as well and came here to post, but saw you beat me to it! I suspect this is a seller who does not know what he has (assuming good intentions). This is indeed very old- maybe an upgrade v1 to v4?

Was about to post here as well, to reference this.
What has got me beat on that listing, is the firmware seems to be the v8 firmware?
How is this possible?

If it has been upgraded to hardware version 4 then it is possible. Still, I don't believe I have ever come across a version 4 with round buttons.

I thought it was impossible to upgrade anything before a v6 to a v8? Wasn’t the v4 chassis the last of that line of upgrades?

Yes correct.
Thus my surprise that the front panel firmware illumination shows (to my knowledge, may be wrong) that the firmware is v8.
I didn't realise this was possible (a) with a v1/v2 chassis (which the listing clearly is, round buttons), And (b) no cards that are v8 cards!
I am wondering how the user has 'tricked' the config programme/the unit itself into successfully receiving 861v8 firmware.

The difference is hardware. A hardware version 4 can run version 8.0 or 8.1 firmware. Although Meridian did not support upgrading a version 4 to 6 or 8, presumably due to the age of the backplane and other components, it is possible with the correct cards on hand to make a version 4 a 6 or 8. I have personally made a version 4 a version 6 due to the lack of available OE12 cards.
