Hi

Trying to utilise some old kit.

Now Roon finds explorer ok. Explorer connected directly to server and optical input on 565. Set input on 565 to optical and 24bit. 565 connected to pair of DSP33s.

Now can play 48khz 16bit material, but 96 24 FLAC is muted. Source into Roon is Tidal.

Thoughts and any ideas appreciated.

Not sure if this is a 565 issue or Roon issue. But as lights appear ok on Explorer think more likely 565.

Changed advance setting in Roon to max 48khz.

Then not muted as Roon down converts to 48khz

So thinking 565 optical limited to this.

565 anything is limited to 48K. 96K didn't exist as a consumer format when 565 was made.

Hi

Thanks for that info. The 565 is from the mid 90s so perhaps not surprised.

I am happy with limiting in Roon and setup utilises 2 bits of kit that was just in boxes. next challenge is to use an old 519 to give me extra optical input. I do remember that improved Jitter performance in the old days.

Ultimate challenge would be to re use the pioneer elite laser disk player, perhaps as CD.

Sound is pretty good and only really outperformed by the 7200SE's, but would be rather irritated if not.

One further update, trying on analogue output, then no need to restrict output frequency let the Explorer be a DAC then the 565 convert to 96 24 to DSP 33. Will do some subjective tests.

Any thoughts?

As an experiment then why not, never say never, but the output of the 565 will still be standard rate not 96K.

If you want 96K then you need a more modern processor (568.2mm, 861v4 or higher).

See Duncan's Meridian Info for device specifications.

Carl

There’s no part of a 565 that does 96k. Not the digital inputs, not the ADC, not the processing, not the DACs and not the digital outputs.
The best thing to do with a spare 565 is give it away, or use it as a case for a project. It was great in its day, but its day was 30 years ago. After only 6 of those years we had the 568.

Why not just get an optical to SPDIF converter that does 96k and bypass the 565? You could hook up the 565 for comms only to have a working volume control…

Hi

Bit harsh, I do remember the incremental difference over my old Yamaha processor when acquired. Just sounded smoother.
Anyway have an old G68D in my second system feeding 5500s and 5000s and DSP33s from an old Arcam AV860. I will try connecting the Explorer to optical input of G68.
I assume that will accept 96 24. Gives me a Roon endpoint on that system.

Currently use Tidal into Apple TV into Arcam, so should be improvement.

My 565 went very quickly away after I got a 568. Despite it being an immense improvement over its predecessor when it was new in the 90s and having fitted the Z board, I couldn’t have gone back to it even in a second system.
G68 has no issue at all with 96k, although you can’t get 96k out of it except with MHR. Fine for DSP33s, annoying for other purposes.
