I have a 861 with Digital speakers. The 861 and all of the speakers power up, but no sound. Speakers adjust on the display when using the volume control.
Does anyone have an idea what is wrong and how to fix it?

Can you describe your setup a little more;
What input do you have?
When did it last work?
Have you checked that all the cables are seated properly?

Is it possible that somehow the 861 is somehow outputting XLR instead of digital?

When I got it years ago, I had the same problem, and then switched the 861 to Meridian Digital from XLR.

Sorry to say, the person who helped me set it up is "unavailable" and I'm computer challenged.

We need more info about your setup to be much more help (I.e. number of speakers, layout and sources, etc). However, as a start to troubleshooting, see p.45-46 of the User Guide and select a standard DSP type just to test things on a very basic level.

Newbie here, literally asking for a friend and providing more info for this inquiry. I’m trying to help Chuck with this and have hands-on with this system.
I have a pdf and an msl file of the system configuration but not seeing a way of sharing them here.

It’s an 861v4 intended to operate in digital mode with HD621, 800 (DVD/3), 519 LD, and 5 analog devices finishing to DSP5000 IN 7.1 matrix.

The conjecture is that the 861v4 controller may be misconfigured since all control functions appear to operate correctly but getting no sound from any of the speakers. Chuck thinks that the audio may be misrouted to analog out xlr connectors rather than the digital interconnect but the pictorial chart indicates that it’s routed to digital not analog.

again, I have a current msl file and config report pdf available for review if anyone is willing to examine and advise.

If they are the first gen DSP5000 you need to switch MHR and 96k off on the 861.

I asked Chuck and the DSP5000 speakers are definitely 18 bit.
I'll check the 861 and see if it somehow it got switched to 24bit.

I'll post again when that question is settled

I’ve checked the 861 configuration manual and find no reference to 18bit vs 24bit. A web search yielded no information.

Is there a Meridian white paper or other documentation on the 18bit and 24bit specs?

If the speakers are definitely 18-bit, you need to turn high speed and MHR off, as the 18-bit DSPs will not be able to decode either.

Anything 88 or 96k will be encoded as MHR, which is encrypted. If the speakers can’t decode this, they will only “hear” a sort of white noise.

Just turn those off and everything should be OK.

Can the output to speakers operate at 18-bit while everything else operates at a higher rate?

An HD621 was added to the system and I don’t know if it can be dumbed down to 18.

I’m not seeing anything in the manuals for the 861 or the HD621 that refer to either bit rate or how to change the bit rate of the inputs, outputs, or both.
