Hi

First OP for me so apologies if I get things wrong.

I have just bought some second hand DSP6000 (sold and labelled as 24/96 upgraded in 1999).

I am really impressed so far, having come from analogue hifi - albeit with a digital streamer as well...

I also bought a 562V (thank Tarik), and an MSR+ remote from eBay - backing doesn't work tho.

all works well, although I have positioned them quite far apart the are further from corners and rear walls than the Meridian guide and sound great - with great imaging

I have some questions

The remote doesn't;t seem to operate the DSP setting - whether I press function or not - could it be that it needs resetting?
I am not sure if the speakers or 562v is the 'controller' and can't see how to change this,
When in standby the 562V displays auto then con when I press 'clear' the speaker don't display anything

The speakers are firmware 5.4 and the 562v is 1,9 - how are these updated on older speakers?

what are the best and most up to date electronics I can use with the DSP6ks

and finally -- how do I tell if they are 24/96 rather than just a sticker on the back?

any advice is appreciate

Don't you hate it when you post a question and then find the answer yourself moments later...

So I read the guide in Duncan's info and have set the controller to type 1 - as the previous owner used a surround controller and now the DSP functions all work

is that where boundary setting are ?

edit - now the speakers appear to be able to be controlled independently - I,e. via the remote they can be adjusted to have different volumes - they are both showing a master via the red dot,

when I try to set them up - 'using button 1' on power up I can select the position to be left or right. -but when I press the green play button as per the guide - it toggles between 5 - 55 and then off

update 2

So I set the right speaker to r 5 (which I now know means slave - but what does 55 mean?!)

and when I turned off the red light was off and then sound came out of that speaker but not the left which was correctly set up as L (master)

so I set the type to 1 again on the left speaker and position to L again and all is now good - including the DSP control syncing between the speakers

edit - now. the left master speaker and the 562v are both controller...

when I put both speakers as ncon and the 562v as con - no sound from the left speaker..

I am done for the night - all works and they sound great - I just have 2 controllers

Press zero while turning the speaker on from the back panel switch. This will get you into the configuration menu where you can set controller to auto and access other functions such as the boundary settings

Thank you - I did that but set it to ncon

so I should set to auto -

what about the 562v do I set that to auto as well as the speakers and the controller then becomes the 'con'

Yes, set both 562 and master speaker to auto.

Make sure you type each speaker - Type 6 normally works the best.

Remember, only one speaker should be the Master (red light on) - use the PLAY button on the remote to toggle master/slave setting
Ensure one speaker is Left and the other is Right - use the arrow keys to select.

Connect everything up, make sure everything is in standby and press CLEAR on the remote.

The 562 should then be the controller.

Hopefully, that should allow things to operate properly.

Then you need to read the manual on the 562 and set that up how you want it.

Make notes as you go, so if you ever need to reset things, you can quickly set things up again.

With regards to firmware, the DSP6000s are 24/96 and v5.4 is the latest.
The 562 v1.9 is on an EPROM, so cannot be easily updated.

The DSP6000s are excellent speakers!

Good luck.

Cheers,

Steve

Thanks it's all working now.

I have set them up as in corners as they are quite close in - sat 15 inches from the rear wall and 28 inches from the side.

I have to have them there as the wife won't have them in front of the windows...

What is the latest electronics I can add to them - and how do I make the most of the 24/96 quality?

They have a very official Meridian sticker on the back with date of upgrade and an engineers signature so I an sure they are 24 bit.

You can run any electronics with a digital output into the DSP6000s (make sure that its maximum output is set to 96KHz). You can't do any more to the speakers apart from re-cap them as you are running the latest 24/96 firmware.

Re-capping is the most cost-effective upgrade you can make (drop me a PM if you want to discuss this further).

With regards to Meridian equipment, you could continue with the 500-series and look for a 568 processor. Next comes the G-series, look for a G68 or a G61R, and then the high-end Meridian is the 800-series.
If you want something simple, then look for a 218 or 210 (these are streamers with limited inputs).

All of the above will allow you to make the best use of the 24/96 capabilities of the speakers.

Cheers,

Steve

If I am not mistaken the original 562V was not 96/24 compatible. Meridian only added a passthrough for 96/24 with the V2 and V3, any ADC conversion will not be 96/24 on any of the 562 models. Do you have any 96/24 sources?

So my understanding is that you are not getting a 96/24 signal into your speakers at present and will not have until you get hold of a 562V/2 ,562V/3,568/2 or G68 or G61R. The G series ones upsample to 96/24. to be honest Unless you have any 96/24 downloads you shouldn't worry too much.

On the subject of positioning with the distances from your walls mentioned you may be able to get away with a flat DSP setting. If you have the G68 or G61R then of course you have access to room correction.

Any upgrades concentrated downwind of the DSP6000's will bring the most improvements, except of course recapping or tweeter replacement if you have the original silver domes.

Any 96/24 source connected directly to the DSP6000's will utilise their full capability.

Stuart,

I don't currently have any 24 bit sources - just planning for the future as I will want to hear them in full glory and see what difference 24 bit makes to me if any. Probably look at roon for Tidal and 24 bit streaming once I get some files

I am experimenting with corner/ boundary and flat at the minute.

The tweeter is black dome and has the Boothroyd/Stuart writing on - is that the 7k compatible one? Either way I don't know when it was done - but I am glad it has been as less likely to need fixing in the near future.
