I have a need for a nice pair of studio monitors for my home studio (electronic pianos and keyboards, laptop, etc.)

I am not really using my DSP3100's which I originally bought for rear surround sound speakers.

Would it be possible to plug a studio mixer or other phono plugs into the DSP's?

If it is a SPDIF digital signal, yes. 24/96 max though.

I use some spare DSP33s with an old 518/562 combo as mixer/switch in a desktop system in my holiday home. (The 518 is the one Steve (syles) has a build thread on here where he converted it to accept a USB input.)

I’d imagine that a 562 on its own would work in the OP’s use case giving line in AD conversion as well as a variety of digital inputs feeding into a single digital line out to the speakers. It is high enough resolution for my rather basic recording to FLAC (vinyl to digital transcription) and work environment playback needs.

OK, I plugged my electronic piano into a mixer, and connected my mixer output with a coax/SPDF cable into the rear of the DSP3100. I can't hear anything.

Since I am removing the DSP's from my home theater setup, should I disconnect the COMMS cables etc from the rear?

Do the displays show that they are on and at an appropriate volume? I suggest starting at 40 and going up/down from there using the Meridian remote. One of them will need to be set as a Controller in order to respond to the remote. Use the manual for guidance on how to wet them up.

This assumes you confirmed that the mixer output is indeed a SPDIF output.

Searching the manuals I can't easily figure out how to set them up as free standing speakers.

Can somebody please explain how to set the Type as 1 and how to indicate one of them is the Controller? Not sure if I need the COMMS cables because my musical instrument mixer will have one SPDF cable plugged into one (for Left) and another SPDF cable plugged into the other (as Right).

If it is SPDIF output it includes both channels. It sounds as though your outputs are analog and will not work with the speakers.

The manual is very clear about how to type the speakers and set one as Master (Controller in your case) and Slave. You must have them connected with a COMMS cable.
