On the off chance of someone having .2 parts leftover from an SE upgrade or even an SE upgrade kit somehow still languishing in stock somewhere, please let me know if available for sale.

Cheers, Ian

It is unclear if SE drivers with the exception of the tweeter will fit into non SE cabinets. There was some debate early on as to whether or not this was possible. Measuring each speaker shows the diameters to be close but before anyone asks, I am not willing to turn my speakers into a science project to satisfy curiosity.

Maybe the eBay seller can shed some light on this. I guess they had a speaker with destroyed cabinets and maybe that is why the drivers are available this way. I suppose if someone buys these and manages to install them in non SE cabinets along with the SE tweeter and SE back panels, they would likely be referred to as SE "tributes". Much the same as when a classic car is modified to be something other than what the VIN number suggests.

Either way, a good set of second hand factory SE speakers will eventually show up at a price more favorable than piecing together a set from eBay scraps. JMO.

So factory SE cabinets are different (bigger?) than non SE?

If yes, how can we see 7200s to upgraded to DSP7200 SE?

Components wise is a factory SE exactly the same as an upgraded to SE?

The cabinets are the same size but the holes for the drivers may not be compatible. True factory SE drivers have silver coloured clamp rings rather than the black (flimsier) clamp rings of the non SE versions. This gives extra rigidity and improved sound quality according to Meridian. When people talk about a set of SE upgrade speakers they are talking about changing out just the electronics (DAC and amps etc) and tweeters for new SE components with the bass drivers remaining unchanged. The sound of the SE upgrade speakers is very close indeed to factory SE speakers - the cost of the silver clamp drivers (which are not contained in the standard upgrade package) far outweighs the improvement in sound quality (at least at the price the set are listed at on eBay). Hi Ian,

We still have about 3 sets of 7200.2 Upgrade Kits available.

The upgrade consists of removing the back panel, removing and replacing the DSP board with the .2 board and replacing the tweeter with the newer tweeters. The DSP to Amp board connections are soldered from board to board so it is not a "plug and play" upgrade.

If you are interested drop me a line.

Marc

Spinal,

Isn’t that listing missing the most critical component necessary to make it the full SE upgrade it proposes that it is? The Be tweeter?

To clarify, the standard SE upgrade kit consists of a new set of electronics (DAC, amps, control board etc) ("back panels") and a new set of Beryllium tweeters. From memory, the tweeters need basic soldering skills whereas the new back panels are plug and play.

The eBay "SE upgrade kit" is something entirely different - simply a new set of drivers with the improved aluminium clamps. This was generally not available through dealers and definitely not part of the standard upgrade kit.
