A question for those tecchi sorts.

If I feed a F80 with an analogue feed, does it convert it to digital, tweak it, then back to analogue again, or does it just amplify it in analogue form?

My "guess" is that it will will be converted into digital ASAP.

I use F80 Optical in from 218/210 combo. My partner did not want to part with our yellow Ferrari emblemed F80. So I put the M stack near with high quality optical connection.

We were both on the HH meetup with Bob where they proudly presented the F80 and played voices and piano. It has a timeless design so I understand it will probably stay with us for a long time.

It does indeed convert all analogue signals to digital - from memory I think it uses a 24 bit 48kHz convertor.

It makes sense as you obviously can't apply any DSP to an analogue signal unless it is converted first.

But the digital engine is 24/96 right? I send in that via 3.5mm optical IN jack.

Crion, whilst I would normally aim to keep the feeds digital until the last stage, I can’t see an optical “out” from either the 218, which I have, or the 210, which I don’t have. There are Co-ax outputs.

Were there earlier versions of either with an optical output? Or am I misunderstanding something?

By the way, is the 210 compatible with Apple AirPlay?

No, it's is not compatible with Airplay.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I use IFI S/PDIF Ipurifier 2 to convert between coaxial and high-quality optical inputs/outputs. It reclocks and dejitters as well.

In 2009 VirusKiller posted a short summary of Q&A sessions with Bob Stuart at Cedia and CES about the F80. Playback is at 48 kHz according to this:

I too send 24/96 to my F80s optical input without any problem so, presumably, the signal just gets down-sampled.
