I recently bought an 818v3 with ID41 card. My music is stored on a NAS Drive - everything on the same network.

Can the 818v3 see my NAS and access/stream music from it?

I also have JRiver installed on my Apple macbook, can that be used to send music to the 818v3 via the Ethernet jack on the ID41 (not USB)?

I do NOT wish to use Roon - monthly cost plus I already own enough hi-def music.

The ID41 only functions using the Sooloos protocols and if you wish to access the files on your NAS, you will need Roon which also supports the Sooloos protocols.

If you purchase during December, you can obtain a lifetime Roon licence before the price rises in January.

Is Sooloos still available as a NAS plugin (albeit without TIDAL these days)? Did it end up as "free"?

The Sooloos SW for QNAP NAS was free, but it’s not available / supported by Meridian these days but can still be obtained.

However, installation is not straightforward as it's not compatible with later QNAP OS versions.

In addition to my reply to Joel, he's a little extra information to aid LuvMusic (that might be considering Sooloos).

I found this June 2022 topic Sooloos QNAP software that explores options.

Whilst a good system in it's time, I'd personally stay clear of Sooloos on QNAP now, I uninstalled it from my QNAP a long-time ago (when I switched to Roon), though I do have a MD600 / TwinStore combination should I ever feel nostalgic.

I've just checked my archive and believe Sooloos_2.467.qpkg together with QNAP Installation Guide (2015-12-01).pdf was the last version to be released.
In the PDF there is a QNAP image that references version 4.1.2 (2015/1/26) of QOS, if I was running that I'd want to be 100% sure the NAS was fully isolated by a firewall.

I think it's also worth mentioning that with Sooloos rather than just referencing the existing music files it imports them a creates a copy using "Sooloos" HASHed folder/file names, which can't practically be used by other streaming systems.

I'm not sure I understand what owning enough Hi-res music means in this instance? You want to play what you have regardless.

Roon is the only platform still actively supported that handles the Sooloos protocol.

You've ruled that out already (even some might find the cost of Roon to be a fraction of the cost of the 818).

Maybe purchase a 2nd hand Sooloos core, but, be aware that it will import and copy your entire library into a bespoke format within Sooloos. And the cost of that 2nd hand unit is likely more than the cost of a Roon lifetime licence. So, again ... apologies ... I just don't get it.

Your system signature says you have the 8000 40th ... assume that's the Ruby Anniversary? Did you not also have the 40th 808 with that?
I also run the 40th set ... so hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Thought this OP might engender a response from your good self, as I could not understand the logic either.
Just enjoy the music is my maxim, enough is never enough. There will always be something new to enjoy.
Tidal plus Roon is almost everything, minus a minority of artists who plow their own furrow.

If the OP really objects to using Roon, an alternative is to add a Meridian 210 to the 818.

Transfer the music library from the NAS to an SSD connected to the 210’s USB/UPnP input.

Download one of the usual apps (such as mconnect) for playback.

I was about to add to my original query that I am willing to purchase a MS600 (maybe I have this wrong) or a 210 etc. to facilitate my goals.

I understand that the price may be more than a lifetime Roon subscription - but am strongly opposed to Roon for various reasons (including philosophically).

To the responder who could not understand my point about owning hi-def music - since I already paid for hi-def music files, why should I pay an "insane" (~$600) amount for software to play it or pay "$10" monthly to play it?

And yes - I do have 40th anniversary but surprisingly in black color (bought as trade-in from a high-end store).

And NO - did not buy the matching CD player - preferred the 818v3.

FWIW, I do NOT use Tidal or Qobuz.

Nor do I have an interest in "unearthing" more music and neither do I need Roon to identify other works by same engineers and producers. So if this is the "real" benefit of Roon, my decision is amply justified.

I am at a stage where I enjoy listening and re-listening to what I possess - almost 3TB worth. May never even hear all I have in the remaining life span.

Regarding curating - already have created folders for different moods/times. Very easy to select whatever I am in mood for.

And there are a lot of other things to do in life, 1-3 hours every day for music suffices.

Whole reason for current situation is that I always wanted to try Meridian gear - and had an opportunity to buy these pieces at an attractive price. Am intending to contrast with Linn pieces, have a Klimax DSM/2 (Katalyst) plus Klimax Kontrol plus Klimax Twin amp - but NO Linn speakers.

One of my experiments will be to hook the digital out from the Klimax DSM to the DSP8000 speakers - this is expected to work.

Just for kicks I may try connecting the Exakt Output from Linn to the SpeakerLink input of the Meridian speakers - hope nothing serious goes wrong!

DO NOT do this. Exakt link is audio, power trigger and clock signals. It is not compatible with SpeakerLink.
