The BBC announce plans to switch-off terrestrial broadcasting by 2030 - to be reliant on streaming.

About 15 years ago I started worrying that I’d have to replace all the 504s in the systems round my house because FM broadcast days were numbered, I even bought a DAB tuner, it was given away years ago (poor DAB signal did it no favours) but the 504s and FM tuner cards in G68s, G91s and my G51 are still doing just fine.
Streaming sounds great if you live somewhere that you have a decent broadband connection, just as the DAB box might have sounded great with a good DAB signal. I’m not sure the BBC, as the headline national broadcaster, could face disenfranchising a large chunk of its audience so blighthly.
Main system; 861v8 ID41, DSP8000SEU fronts with DSP5500 centre and DSP7000 rears (all in lovely silver) 504, HD621 Second system 861v4 ID40 LPS, G98DH, 504, HD621, 2x DSP5200 with DSP5200 centre MD600 tucked away in study. Lots of other Meridian!

Thread title says 2023, had me worried for a while…
I can’t see how the BBC can do this (save money) without shutting off all UK transmissions as all signals go through BBC playout and they haven’t run the transmitters for at least 25 years.

If the government can't communicate with us during a country-wide power outage using anything other than FM then I suspect that and TV radio broadcasts will be here for a while yet! Well, until some idiot says 'we don't need these any more, because such a scenario would never occur'...

I’m surprised that all UK free to air television transmission hasn’t entirely moved from terrestrial to satellite (Freesat). All programmes could be transmitted in HD due to unlimited bandwidth compared to ground based transmitters.

I'm more impressed that they think they will still be broadcasting TV at all by 2030.
No Darling, I've had it months!

In my youth, my older Brother and I used to enjoy playing around with Short Wave radio - and avidly listening to radio stations from around the world late at night.
Similarly, today, I like viewing different video satellite feeds (via my Multytenne QuattroSat Dish) from across Europe, Africa and the Far East.
The likes of SkyStream don’t carry the same sense of adventure compared to using a multi-satellite dish.

I have to agree…
We very rarely find ourselves watching tv live now. The convenience of catch up and streaming is just too easy.
In my Youth I was the remote 🤣
