When listening today my left hand 7200.2 loudspeaker suddenly developed a loud mid-range honk as if someone had turned a 1K2 pot on that channel up to 11. It skewed the image to the left in doing so and suddenly my system sounded horrible.

Reseating the connections and rebooting the speakers caused no change and then after about five minutes, and without any further intervention from me, it went back to normal.

Could this be a capacitor or capacitors on the amp board going down? The speakers are 11 years old.

What source were you using at the time?

I doubt it was the speakers, especially as a reset would normally resolve the issue...

Double-check the source first and see if it happens again.

Sound to me like a it could be cap misbehaving. If it is, then it will continue to happen with more regularity.
if that happens then time for the olde "service".

It's not the source as the issue was evident regardless of the input and it first happened whilst music was playing.

That's my feeling too. I've got the local Meridian dealer ferreting around to find out if the repair can be done on site or whether the board needs to be sent away for the work to be carried out.
Chances are that both speakers' boards should get done since if a cap is going on one of them then the other probably isn't far behind.

While it seems unusual for a Meridian speaker to suffer issues at this age, I'd definitely recap both - and, for peace of mind, I'd likely do all the electrolytic caps at the same time. Saves shipping costs and worrying over the next few years whether a second failure might take out something significant.

I swapped the boards between cabinets to see if the fault followed the electronics. It did. I have therefore booked both boards in for a full re-capping.
There's a three to four week lead time for the repair to be done. Being without my 7200s for a month is going to be hard!

Good to see you've got to the root of the problem so quickly & that a solution is at hand.

Not sure if it is the caps. I have had an issue with my DSP7200.2's, where one speaker had a higher output and the tonal balance was wrong. Took me a lot testing and fiddling as I assumed the problem was between the speakers and the listening chair. But it turned out to be the DSP boards. It was fixed by Meridian for a very acceptable price. It still is the only issue I ever had with DSP's, and I view them as very reliable.

When I bought my DSP8000's they would have tonal balance issues that came and went. I upgraded to the SE package and the problem all but went away. It seems my speakers need a couple minutes from startup to settle in, something I can accelerate by turning the volume up, but in my case within a minute the balance becomes a non issue.

The advantage of the SE upgrade is that pretty much all the electronics were replaced as part of the upgrade. I think it was just the PSU and display circuit that remained (along with the woofers).
