I have an older pair of DSP5200SL which was running firmware 1.30. I was able to get hold of the latest firmware (2.63) and as there is no Meridian dealer in my country of residence, I wanted to try an update myself.

I purchased from Amazon this USB to RJ45 cable as there is no serial connector at the back of the speaker, so I assumed that I had to connect over the SL port.

After connecting it to my Windows 10 HTPC and getting an updated driver, it presented as COM4 to the firmware updater program - so far so good.

Running an identify didn't work but the popup said this was for 500 series or other Meridian/Faroudja devices anyway so I was not concerned. I selected the correct firmware update file, hit start, and it asked me to power cycle the speaker which I did.

Nothing happened. I tried changing the COM connection from the default 9600 baud to 4800, no luck. After trying a few different things, the dot matrix display on the 5200 finally said "Error!" and now when I power it on I get all 4 coloured lights permanently on and I cannot get it back to normal!

I pressed Store on the MSR+ while powering on and nothing - just the constant 4 LEDs.

Can anyone suggest a way I can reset this back to factory defaults and/or upgrade the firmware?

I don't think the DSP5200SL's will support v2.63, they may require an earlier firmware version.

From memory, the DSP5200.2's have a version of v2.63 and there is also a different version of the firmware for the DSP5200SE's.

You need to make sure you've got the correct firmware version for the DSP board fitted to the speakers.

Speak to an HH-friendly dealer and obtain an earlier firmware version. You should still be able to flash the speaker, even in its current state - it may take some patience and turning the speaker off and on a couple of times...

To flash the speakers, you ideally need a Cisco blue serial cable (and supported USB to Serial converter)

Good luck,

Steve

2.63 is the latest firmware for SL 5200's. 3.16 is for the dot 2 and SE versions.

There is no 'factory reset' as such from a speaker with which you can no longer communicate.
Sounds like your speaker has 'Bricked'

My suggestion:
Get hold of a Keyspan USA 19HS USB to RS232 convertor.
Then a proper Meridian RS232 to SpeakerLink cable, or an Audio Images green SpeakerLink adaptor wink

Try uploading the firmware again while crossing everything you have which can be crossed.

If this doesn't work, then it's backpanel off and to a Meridian dealer.

Thanks for the replies.

I found the Keyspan USA 19HS on Amazon but not the Meridian RS232 to SpeakerLink cable. Here in the UAE it is really hard to get items shipped internationally frown

Is there an equivalent to the Meridian RS232 to SpeakerLink cable that I can purchase on Amazon?

You can use the Cisco console cable. This baby blue cable is available nearly everywhere and is very affordable. Works perfectly.
