I don't get why this would happen. SpeakerLink was designed to work over standard Cat 5e before Meridian brought out their own branded cable - I've tried a few ethernet cables and all functioned perfectly.
More sophisticated cables do not connect all the RJ45 pins or connect some at one end only (floating construction) in order to reduce noise. For SpeakerLink use this could result in comms not working. Specifying that the cable is to be used for Meridian SpeakerLink ensures that everything works correctly. This is why such cables are called network cables or something similar as they do not fully comply with the cat specification because all the pins are not connected. AFAIK.

I checked a Network Acoustics streaming cable, pins 1, 2, 3 and 6 are used. Audioquest Cinnamon all pins are used.

Speaking of the 818v3

Currently have a 218 with 5200se’s and a dsw.2

Is it worth moving up to the 818v3 sound wise in this configuration? I know it may be a bit overkill but is the improvement worth it until someday i get back up to the 7200’s

Yes, the 818v3 is worth the upgrade, especially if you need more inputs.

I do not think you will hear the full potential of your 5k2SE speakers unless you upgrade your 818. As others have said, it is a very worthwhile upgrade and certainly not overkill.

I'd try to put you off that one but unfortunately, even though it took me 20 years to save up it's worth it.

IMHO, it’s best if you can to get the unit in your system on extended loan, to really assess if it is better for you before spending big.

It should also be pretty easy to switch between the 818 and 218 into your DSPs, so you have a fair comparison.
