I have recently purchased the UltraDAC to improve the sound quality of my stereo listening.

I have connected:
- 861 L/R SpeakerLink out to the UlraDAC SpeakerLink.
- 861 Centre and surround (left and right) XLR out from the 861 are connected to my Macintosh 205.
- UltraDAC Front (L and R) XLR out from the Ultra connected to the Mac205.

All multi channel sources are connected to UHD722 and all stereo sources are connected directly to the Ultra.

My intention is to use the Ultra to process the front L&R channels for all listening/viewing, stereo and 5.1. Stereo through the Ultra is a step up from the 861, which is already excellent, and I am happy that I have not made an expensive mistake.

My problem is that for 5.1 listening, Sky, SACD, DVD-A etc. I cannot match the volume of the 861 and Ultra, the front L&R are much lower than the centre and surrounds and not until the Ultra volume approaches “50” do the fronts become audible.

I have tried the Ultra into the 861 via analogue RCA, this is the connection method that is suggested by the Meridian Config program, it works but there is a noticeable drop in sound quality compared to the Ultra driving the amps directly.

I have left messages on the Meridian web site (two months ago) and not received a reply, I also spoke to a lady at Mr Tech Guy, (ten days ago) who politely took my number and told me a technician would call me back but no one did.

Any suggestions on how to configure?
Thanks in advance.

You will need to set up the 861 so that it thinks there are two full range DSP speakers such as DSP8000's as front left and right and recalibrate the channel levels.

As your speakers have not changed you can probably get away without doing room correction again. You may also have to tweak the speaker delays a bit to make up for the SpeakerLink to Ultra DAC processing.

Dear Bruce, thanks for great advice, just reconfigured the 861 as you suggested, works great! I’m saving for two more Ultras for centre and surrounds.

How wonderful to hear from someone enthusing about their Meridian system; and from someone who has an UltraDac. We seem to have had very few reports from UltraDac owners.
