One network input (Ethernet) for connection to a Roon system or an alternative control interface. Can you connect the 218 with the dedicated Ethernet player port on a Melco or Innuos device? Any idea, the manual etc. is vague to my mind. Thanks

No. The input in question is for a Meridian, Sooloos or Roon device.

The ethernet port is for connection to a network so that the 218 can be controlled and so that the Sooloos or Roon core can can play media via the endpoint in the 218. The SpeakerLink input is for Meridian devices only.

The SpeakerLink input is for Meridian devices only. Couldn't I adapt the XLR output of a device like the Emerson Digital network bridge (with an XLR-to-RJ45 100 ohm cable) to feed my 218 SpeakerLink input? Or does it have to be Meridian?

Maybe. My comment on the Meridian devices only refers to what is supported by Meridian.. You can MHR off on the 218 but I am not sure if it applies to the input as it applies to the output.
