I’ve really missed my Control:10 since M stopped them being useful. This little project has taken a while, but I’m one of those ‘hundred projects at once’ sort of guys.
Great stuff. Have you (as I plan to do but, too many projects, not yet done) put a small Intel board into your C10/15 case (I am intending to cannibalise a fairly old NUC)? If so, which LVDS interface/converter have you used? I found one very cheaply on eBay (from Singapore I think) but didn't buy it then.
I still love the C10/15 form factor and want to use mine as interfaces for Roon. I bought a low profile riser card and a Radeon (very cheap but OpenGL 3) video card on spec so I could retain the original motherboard, but I don't think it is going to fit in so I have switched to the NUC idea. But I have only dreamed so far and you have done it, so well done!
I have successfully converted a Control:15 to become a full touchscreen Roon controller and audio endpoint. Tested with Roon 1.8
There is no need to change out any hardware - everything runs successfully on the original hardware (for performance - change out the hard disk for an SSD). The only functionality lost is that of the CD drive.
If anyone would like further information, please feel free to PM me.
Steve, why didn’t you speak up? You might have saved me the trouble!
I did get Roon running on the original hardware, using Roon Extensions and a web browser, but it was pretty horrible to use, and didn’t really resemble Roon or Sooloos.
This time I’ve pretty much gutted the old girl. There’s a new LCD controller, new backlight controller, new touch controller, and the guts of a NUC. It runs Windows 10.
What is great about doing it this way is that you get all of the modern connectivity. No ethernet cable required, it has wifi.
It also streams directly to my Bluetooth headphones. I always thought the original should have had a headphone output.
Steve, why not post something so we can all see what you’ve accomplished?
The upgrade only works on the latter Control-15 devices with a specific motherboard. I'm still working on updating a Control-10 but have run into the same problems as you did!
This only converts the Control-15 into a touch-screen Roon Remote (with audio endpoint), it will not support core or store functionality, although it is fairly easy to modify an MC200 to become a Roon core & store.
I will post more information soon along with pictures of the unit in operation. There are still a few unanswered questions that need to be resolved...
That's excellent Steve. With all of the other Core options available, a C10 or C15 really only needs to run Roon Control, and optionally be an endpoint.
Yes, the Control:10 motherboard is an unfriendly beast. I tried what I thought was reasonable, but every option was really heading for a dead end. I even spoke with the engineer who designed it, but he was not helpful, just saying it was too old, move on.
I'm still determined to make something out of it.....
