Hi
What is the optimum height for DSP3200s used as rears in a 5.1 setup? They need to be above the back of the sofa, which is against the wall, so listening position is very close. Should they point onwards towards the sofa or out towards the middle of the room?
Thanks. Pete

Hi,
I think you just need to try either orientation and see which you prefer. Another option might be to mount them upside-down (wall mounts should be able to do that) high up but it's difficult to try and you need power above the ceiling. I have a pair of M6 speakers sat either side of the sofa, technically they point out into the room but they have a very wide dispersion, so it doesn't matter too much.

Don’t worry - I’ve found what I’m after on the Dolby site. For reference, Dolby Atmos Installation Guide Pages 6 onwards have some helpful diagrams and heights, toe in etc.

Current Dolby specification is 110-120-deg and ear height. It used to be 1-2 feet above ear height before object oriented formats arrived, now it's actually spec'd at ear height. I disagree with that specification though, I think it should be a bit above so that it clears furniture and other heads. Dolby virtual 5.1 speakers setup guideIt's hard to tell from your photo, but if you're close to the wall like it seems, then I'd probably mount them so the tweeters are about 1ft above ear height and I'd probably angle them a little off axis, sort of firing at each other. If they are really close to your head and on axis it can be distracting and very localized, where with 5.1 imo it's better to be a bit more diffused to fill in the rear and side gaps of information (this is why dipoles were popular with 5.1). Mount them on a rotating bracket so you can play with a bit bit after they are mounted, but, I'd do 1ft above ear level or whatever height gives the tweeter a clear line of sight to everyones ears without any obstruction.

Thank you both. I’ll try above ear height and I have the correct fully adjustable and swivel bracket.

Hi,
I’d comment that you’re not actually setting up a Dolby Atmos or any sort of virtual 5.1 system, so if anything I’d stick with something that best approaches the Meridian recommended 5.1 set up.

How does the Meridian 5.1 setup differ?
M#1: Bluesound Node (N130)>DSP3100 + Analog Sub M#2: WiiM Pro > DSP5000
