Using a G65 and UHD722, is there a recommended tutorial for setup? I see the owners manuals but is there a third party one that walks you through it or a specific thread you recommend? There is an RS232 connection on the back, instead of messing with the tiny display is there a way to do this all from a laptop? Does it offer some kind of room correction equivalent, like Dirac or Audyssey? I don't see a microphone but honestly haven't looked through everything yet.

Hi,

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry if it sounds like a bit of a downer but ...

There isn't a specific set-up tutorial, but the set up is all pretty similar so you can search the forum for set up advice of the UHD722 or HD621 with any of the Meridian surround processors.
Not sure why there would be a 3rd party manual, but I'd recommend that you do have a good read at the manuals.
I wouldn't describe the G65 display as 'tiny' but the configuration wizard is all explained from P43 of the manual.
Yes, you can do the set up via a windows computer which is described on P53 of the manual.
There is room correction but that's in another manual and you'll need to supply a microphone (similar to the old Radio Shack one) for calibration (P55 of the manual).

You haven't mentioned any speakers, so it would be useful to know if you're using Meridian DSP speakers or not.

Meridian stuff isn't simple plug and play but a good read at the manuals will hopefully get you going.

Brian

Thank you for the thoughtful response, Brian. Yes, by third-party I meant tutorials - sometimes the user created stuff is better than the manual. I'll for sure do some searching around here, this seems like a nice active community.

I'm basically trying to get my dad's home theater setup. He has a G65, UHD722, DSP5200SE towers and center, and DSP3200 rear speakers. The 3200s he sent in for repair because they were not working. I checked the fuses on them and they were intact, just somehow the amps both went completely dead on them. Power spike? I don't know. He doesn't use the room often enough to know when they actually died. Not sure when those come back but when they do I'd like to help him get everything calibrated again so was doing some homework. The speakers are wonderful, the processors are a little foreign to me so I'd like to get comfortable with them and understand them better. Besides setup, things like I don't see them recognize sound formats like True HD or Atmos, so it has always been a mystery in if it's actually getting the right flag or just passing PCM or what. He also has a JL Audio E110 subwoofer to fill in the final octaves that I think would pair nicely with where the 5200s roll off.

Does a MiniDSP UMIK-1 with a calibration file work?

Thanks, I'll for sure grab his manuals and start digging through them.

Thanks. I doubt the speakers will be repaired by then. I actually would really like to just learn Meridians ecosystem a bit so I'm not so in the dark for helping him in the future.

It's a simple 5.1 setup and all SpeakerLink based (which I think is just cat5e?). So I imagine I set IP addresses for each speaker and then set the processor know which is which? The front 3 are still connected, so the LCRs are already set. I imagine the repaired rears I'll need to reconfigure.

This is currently just a 5.1 system, but just out of curiosity, do you know if the G65 supports the object oriented formats? Does it just fall back on the 7.1 bed layer? Are there people running Meridian Atmos or DTSX Pro setups? Or mixing them with Altitudes?

Cat 5e works, shielded cat cable is better

No, there are no IP addresses

G65 does not support object based 3D immersive formats.

The G65 is 7.1 / 5.1 only. It can pass hi res audio using a UHD722 as long as the source is capable of passing the digital signal as PCM or LPCM. Other wise it is vanilla DTS and Dolby digital.

There are people using a 271 to drive DSP speakers with other manufacturers processors such as the Trinnov.

Hi,

I think Bruce has covered most of your questions, and sorry to hear of your speaker troubles.

I'll just clarify that the G65 is really 5.1 only. While it can output 7.1 the side channels are 'matrixed' rather than discrete, so it can't handle a 7.1 discrete input from the UHD722. Only the 861 processor (V6 & V8 I think) can do full 7.1. No Meridian processor can handle any of the more recent formats, that's why they produced the 271 unit. That lack is a bit of an issue for many of us on here, but just why that's the case is for another discussion_ however, the kit 'does what it does' pretty well.

I think Meridian kit is a bit too tricky for 'tutorials' but there's plenty of help on this forum, so just ask away.

Personally I'm not familiar with the MiniDSP UMIK-1 but I'm sure I've seen some discussions, so I'm sure there are users with that experience around to help.

Ah okay, thank you! Good to know. I think for now I'll just keep his system with the G65, but it's good to know if he wants to adapt to the new formats there is a route. He mostly watches via AppleTV (Netflix, Plex). I believe AppleTVs will pass the 7.1 base layer of an Atmos soundtrack as PCM, do you know? Basically if he buys a 4k UHD blu-ray with an Atmos soundtrack, I'd like him to be able to pass lossless audio to his 5.1 setup.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Brian. Ah okay, that's fine because he just has 5.1 now. That room doesn't really lend itself to 7.1. It could work for 5.1.4 though, but I think for now I'll just keep it 5.1 since I'd have to scrap the G65 to do so. It appeals to me to keep the signal completely digital through the crossover. It's great to know the 271 exists though, as if he ever moves or really gets the itch for object oriented formats that would open the doors while still using these great sounding speakers. An XLR analog input on the back of these would have been nice though lol, but, I guess that's kind of blasphemy.

I appreciate the offer for help, I'll start reading the manuals and when his speakers get back I'll get started. Not sure on the repair time but they are in motion.

The UMIK-1 with REW is fantastic, and very affordable. Great stocking stuffer (REW is free, UMIK-1 is like 110 bucks) wink
