Hello,
During a final pre-lockdown visit to my parents I recovered a turntable and sack load of albums from 35 years ago. After borrowing a Rega phono amp I have to conclude the record beats the stream.
I thought I had things pretty good with hi res, room correction, et all but the “topography” of the sound of the records is so much more involving.
The cons of having to get up and change record/static/skipping are all very real but if my pursuit is realistic sonic playback maybe I should consider buying new album releases?
My system is not inadequate yet adding an old Technics linear turntable has made me question dropping £5k on a new streaming solution, anyone’s thoughts would be much appreciated.

Did you try any MQA?

No 18 in the Hall of fame smile I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best:
GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

If you like records (vinyl they are called now for reasons I don't understand) then try some of Ampex's commercially produced reel to reel tapes from the later 1960s. The smooth response and lack of distortion puts modern methods into the shade once the music starts. Before that point you will hear the hiss (but you get used to it!).

I am a fan of MQA and will generally choose that version over others( except Dido - I’m still standing, her brother released a non-MQA version after the original releases which is better) but good as most MQA are;... I found a 12” of Neneh Cherry Buffalo Stance, ( in terms of the complete package) it makes my speakers do things I’ve never heard before, up down, left and right, highs/lows.
To be clear I’m now listening to Roon and it sounds great, but wow, did audio science take a wrong turn?
