Currently I have several video sources connected to my G68SL in my home theater setup, DirecTV, Roku, Western Digital Live. Each of those sources had an audio output (optical cables, etc) that are plugged into my Meridian receiver. Their video is connected via HDMI cables to the projector via an HDMI switch.

I want to add an Apple TV box as a new source, but it does not appear to have any audio outputs. It has an HDMI port and an ethernet port, but no separate audio output. Can somebody help me figure out how to get the audio signal from an Apple TV source into my G68? I'm stumped. Obviously, I am not very tech savvy about this stuff.

Please help.

I think I’m right in saying only the latest 4K Apple boxes don’t have optical out. So if you don’t want 4K get an older apple box.

That’s the path of least resistance. Alternatively an HD621 HDMI controller will work

The Meridian way is to use an HD621 or for 4k video a UHD722. You feed the combined video and audio of the HDMI from the Apple into one of those, it separates the video from the audio and you can then send the video to your pj by HDMI and the audio from the Meridian box to your processor. This is not cheap even second hand, but there are much less expensive third party makes that can do the same thing - of varying quality and not in quite so integrated a manner as the M products do it.

You could always use a HDMI extractor to get the digital audio.

Thanks for the advice. When I bought the unit it was not for my home theater and didn't care about the optical audio. Since I have the ROKU, I will probably just forget about the Apple TV.

You could buy an Airport Express and stream the sound from the Apple TV to it then connect its optical / mini jack out.

I don't think Airplay will pass Dolby Digital.

Apple TV outputs 7.1 LPCM, 2.0 PCM or 5.1 Dolby Digital.

You could use a HDMI audio extractor with optical output (5.1 Dolby Digital or PCM 2.0), very cheap, or Meridian HD621/UHD722, LPCM 5.1 and decoding inside G68.

For a similar scenario, I used:
HDMI/Audio extracter

With good results for $25

Hello

All I do is connect all my video sources to the TV by HDMI then feed the audio back to my G65 by optical link from the TV.

Sounds the same to me as when I tried to connect audio direct to the processor and makes life a whole lot simpler.

I am guessing that his projector doesn’t have a digital audio output.

I use HDMI extractor with my G61R and Apple TV4.
It works well.
