First things first, congratulations on picking up the G68
1) Calibrating the speakers seems like a bit of a chore w/o a computer and a long USB or Serial cable. Is there any way to use the remote to set levels, phase, etc.?
The wizard should allow you to use the remote once you get into setup mode. If the arrow keys and Enter don't work, use the Function Key + the key you want so that it sends this using Processor values instead of other values.
2) Speaking of using a computer, I gave up on it last night bcs. the USB connection kept flaking out. I installed everything and connected to the G68, but once I got into the configuration stage, the computer couldn't communicate w/ the G68 anymore. The somewhat flakey USB connectivity seems like a theme here among other users, is the Serial connection any more stable?
The Keyspan single port USB/Serial adapter works well with the G68, I am currently trying to get the 4 port unit working properly with multiple pieces of Meridian gear in a system.
There is a USB driver that is supposed to work well with G68 as well, although I have not personally used it and as such, I can't comment on its effectiveness.
3) In the MConfig, when I attached my sources to the G68, some, like the two-channel SACD changer I connected to both D8 and A4 (coax for redbook, analog for SACD was my intention). It seems that the G68 will only look on the D8 for a signal, which isn't present if SACD material is playing. Is there anyway to have the M look first for the D8 and failing that look for the A4 signal? I guess otherwise, I'd need to select two sources, one for the D8 and one for the A4?
There's no way to do this that I can find in MConfig. An input is either digital or analog, not both. Building a second source is the only way it's going to work.
4) In a 7.1 setup, the LX/RX are the surrounds and the Rear L/R are the rear surrounds? Seems a little counter-intuitive.
It's mapped so that the surround L/R in a 5.1 setup goto rear L/R. I'm guessing M feels that 5.1 is a more prevalent installation option than 7.1.
5) I get a lot of noise on the speakers when the USB is connected to the computer. Is that normal?
Haven't tried this. Is this in the form of a ground loop hum (60Hz, US, 50Hz just about everywhere else)? If it is, then it's due to the fact that the M kit and the PC are on different circuits.
6) Is there anything I need to do to tell the G68 to upsample non-DD/DTS signals? Is it just as simple as setting the "HS?" to yes?
HS out is the signal to upsample incoming PCM datastreams if possible.
7) Is there any way to get the volume display to stick in the -60 - 10 mode as opposed to the 0-99 mode? I'm used to the volume reading -15 or whatever, and getting up to press the display button on the unit is slightly annoying...
Nope, you have to hit <Display> for the time being. It would be nice to give you the option of the default being volume level vs. Reference level but that's not there at this time.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
