I need video streaming for home. My needs are:
* Windows server (existing W10 machine with JBOD) * Apple clients (iPhone, iPad, MacBook, AppleTV) * Multiple playback streams simultaneously * WAF high (will also be used by kids) * Possible to save video onto client devices for offline watching while away from home * Ability to control any stream from any device (for keeping checks on kids) * Support of as high resolution as possibly relevant (can one even rip 4K BD discs???) * Support of crummy video files too * Doesn't have to be entirely free, but please not Kaleidescape prices.
I understood Plex to be the front runner but I think in the past few years more have appeared. (My Dad uses Emby and recommends it.)
Recommendations?

I suggest installing iHomeServer on your PC/Server, and AppleTV to watch contents on television. On your iOS devices, the AppleTV app will facilitate access to your server.

Im a big fan of Plex. Been using it for years. Because it has always worked I havent spent much time investigating alternatives.
I also havent paid for PlexPass so cant say how well downloading content to your mobile devices works which is one of your requirements.

I use My Movies on my old server with WHS 2011. For playback I use Dune HD Max and iPad/iPhone app for control. I don't know if can do everything you want, but most if I think. More info can be found here: https://www.mymovies.dkPlayback in iPad/iPhone app is possible, but no app for ATV. You can still use Infuse in ATV to stream from your server. My Movies can create metadata for many different players, My Movies is not free, but compared to Kaleidescape... I think My Movies still have a very nice user interface and with IMDb integrated you can read about actors etc.

Hi
I have had different setups and will still occasionally fire up Kodi and watch a film, but the family are not interested . Netflix,Amazon TV & Sky Go get the majority of use in my house - No training required. Available on all formats etc,.
If you can get your family to use Roon/Sooloos and not complain that it's not Spotify, you may be OK!
Cheers Tom
