Hey guys,

I've been in love with my Meridian 568. Although it doesn't do anything fancy by today's standards, it pretty good still but I have a problem.

I would like to stream AppleTV. I've got the HDMI out from the Apple TV to my Sim2 PJ, but there's no sound when I connect the optical out from the Apple to the optical in on the 568.
Does it not recognize the English accent? What am I missing here?

Thank you in advance.

Is the AppleTV set to output PCM?

Hi James, thank you for helping me. So appreciated!

my ATV is 3rd generation. My audio choices are:

1. Dolby Digital: Auto or on or off
2. Audio Output: Auto or 16bit

I've been reading some threads elsewhere, I've checked the end of the TOSlink, there is a red light, yet my 568 outputs nothing on the LD (laser disc) which is suppose to be the optical input (TOSlink).

Which choices above should I try? seems they don't work... I don't see a PCM choice...

Oh, also, when I toggle the remote onto the LD info it states "PCM NL". I think it means PCM not locked. So, the big question, why does it not lock onto PCM?

On the Apple TV, turn the Dolby Digital off in order to default to PCM. From the 568 data sheet it would appear that the 568 can handle up to 24-bit so you should not need to select the 16-bit option, however, having selected PCM then try the 16-bit option if the PCM selection alone did not fix the issue - this would simply be as a separate test / diagnostic.

The source labelled inputs and physical inputs are completely configurable.
Unless you know for sure (ie you set it up like that either via programming it or setting to a standard type) what source label is connected to, then you probably want to try other source labels or retype to a known good configuration - later will lose customisations and settings. Don't assume that LD is the source for optical.

Well, no audio situation even after doing what you guys recommended. Maybe I need a new TOSlink interconnect. How bright is the red light at the other end? I noticed my red light is dull, maybe it's damaged? I couldn't get another one today being that its Easter and stores are closed.

Is the optical in on the 568 able to take optical signal without anything intervening? I was reading the manual and, for example, to connect to a laser player it calls for a Meridian 519 demodulator. Now, this is no laser disc player, but the question still remains... maybe it cannot process an optical signal without a 519? Please tell me it SHOULD be able to do so, would be great and I can push on to make it work.

With respect to the position "LD-01", I've not changed anything on it since it was new. I did toggle through all the inputs on the remote and on the unit... CD, Radio, LP, TV, Tape1, Tape2, ..., VCR2, LD. Shouldn't I have landed on the active input at some point? Maybe not necessarily? Maybe I need to go into the 568 and make some changes? Or am I good?

Thank you all once again, so much!

Jaime

'Push on' - It's a standard optical input - no demodulator needed except for laserdisc players - never owned a laserdisc myself to know why.

The only way to know for sure what source label is physically connected to optical input is to do a retype (ie factory initialisation) to a known basic type. But you will be back at square one for that and sounds like the dull red signal may well be the issue. I would be surprised if it was the cable as they seem pretty robust to me unless they have been abused. Another optical source may be a better reference - TV, DVD, etc.

Hi,

The LD input on O1 should work just fine and you don’t need a 519 either.
Since you have an Oppo (which should have an optical output), why don’t you try connecting that to the LD input and see how that works. If you don’t get anything, then it’s the optical cable, otherwise it’s a weak output from the ATV.

EDIT: I don’t want to be to cheeky and you seem to have kit that suggests that you know what you’ve doing but just make sure that you’re not trying to connect an optical lead that has a 3.5mm jack adapter attached.

Brian

Thank you guys, heheh, it was the Toslink optical cable! Got a new one today and now I got audio! Thank you so much!

Another question: I updated my signature so I can show what streaming/Satellite output options I have. I was able to download firmware to the 568 to the 1.55 (I know, a tad bit late, right?!). My son did it for me using his Mac with parallels (he was 5 years old when I purchased this 568. Wow, now he's helping me with it-knot in my throat smile ).

Anyway, Given the limitations of the 568 what outputs should I be using? The AppleTV has both HDMI and TOSlink. This is a no brainer for a quick setup as the 568 has no HDMI inputs but does have TOSlink, which is what I connected. HDMI goes straight to projector. However, there are HDMI to Coaxial and component conversions... What would be sonically best?

The DirecTV genie has HDMI, digital coaxial (orange colored RCA jack), and a round 10-din labeled "A/V".

Again, the 568 has no HDMI in so I use the HDMI outs only as Video-going straight to my Sim2 Projector. My thoughts are that if possible, I can get HDMI splitters to feed the projector *and* convert to component or ...?
So many permutations to consider here. I just hope I'm not ignorantly using lower resolution audio potential in the 568.

Any thoughts welcomed!

Thank you for all your help
Jaime

Hi,

Glad you got sorted out with you new optical lead.

I’d refer you back to your other thread (with regard to finding a 568.2mm and a HD621 or UHD722) for your future options. As things stand it’s best to keep things simple with your 568 and just use the digital coax or TOSlink connections to the source equipment, so no real need for fancy extractors.

The 568 is slightly limited in the number of inputs, so it’s possible that you might need a cheap optical to coax converter to maximise the use of the processor and while other Meridian units (562V1/2/3) could be used, I think you’d be better off using your cash for a 568.2mm and HD621 combo.

Use the digital coax output of the DTV genie. The pin cable is analog out.
