Last week I went and listened to Lexicon's latest Dirac processor, and very good it was too.

Since then I have been very impressed by Meridian's 210 streamer, making me have a think.

There is NO WAY on earth that will be paying £12k for ANY piece of HiFi, but I could pick up an 861v4 FAR more reasonably.

I have no interest in:
>4k currently, and would leave my video going from my Oppo 105D; or
>Any more speakers in my living room than my current 5.3 setup.

My potential plan would be to get the right cards to:

>Take the decoded output from the 105D > 861 analogue inputs;and
>Take the analogue outs to the AV amps.

Are the cards readily available?

Would this be worth doing?

Any other options worth considering?

Should I just live with the 105D and buy more films? Or with the current emergency loo paper wink

Thanks,
M

I do exactly what your considering and love the sound I achieve. 861v4 with LMPS, XLR and phono analogue outs plus fully loaded except ID40/41.
I still see no reason to upgrade, not sure how helpful this offer is as Mconfig is something I struggle with but your welcome to bring your amps/speakers to hear your equipment on the end of a 861v4.

Hi Brian,

That is really very kind of you and I may well take you up on the offer on the other side of this, God willing.

At the least I will bring some refreshments!

I remember selling my 561, probably a decade ago, to a chap in London (might even be on this forum). Anyway, we set it up and it was simply magnificent in his system. By most accounts, certainly not Meridian's finest processor and already a bit long in the tooth, but still miles ahead of most other stuff.

I have an 861v4 with LPSU in my Meridian digital theatre which is a considerable number of notches above the 561. Unless I decided that I simply had to go major-league-Atmos-multi-channel, it's all I could ever want sonically.

Agreed on 861v4 LPS. An excellent choice.

Thanks gents.

What cards to I need to get in order to take the decoded signal from my Oppo, single ended, and out to my power amps - balanced and SE?

I have seen the ID40 card, as I will be streaming to the Oppo what does this give me?

Thx

For a multi-channel input, you'll need an IA45 - two six-channel discreet inputs with 96K ADC

For outputs, you will need two OA13 192K Digital Output cards (XLR).

Both cards are fairly rare, so will need a little searching to find...

You will also need to source a decent 861v4, ideally with LPS - although you can upgrade to LPS for £750.

The ID40 is used for streaming from Sooloos or Roon.

I hope you manage to locate a suitable unit - the 861v4 is an absolutely brilliant unit!

Cheers,

Steve

The OP really should invest in a HD621 to accompany his prospective 861v4 and thus avoid the unnecessary D-to-A, A-to-D cycles which occur with an analog connection between his Oppo and the new preprocessor.
Other than that, as my signature would attest, I'm also firmly a fan of his proposed gear choices.

Yes, I see what you mean about the cards!

Thanks for the detailed reply, precisely what I needed, but I think this may prove a loooong time exercise.

Cheers,

M

Might not be as bad as it may seem. I don't believe I have ever seen a 861v4 that did not have the IA45 card installed in it. OA12 and OA13 do pop up from time to time.
