It appears that this USB TO SPDIF CONVERTER is my best bet.
I'm assuming this would work with any PC's USB port... I don't have experience in using a PC's USB for audio.

Laptop and dock are brand new and top of the line.
Can anyone think of a reason why this wouldn't work?

I'm currently using an AC200/3200 combination as PC speakers in spare room and it's doing a fine job.

It would probably work but with a bit of research (USB DAC) and a few dollars more you would probably get something to do the rest of the system a bit of justice.

Surely not a DAC into DSP. Just a USB to SPDIF.

I had a similar system for a number of years, with the computer feeding DSP5200s directly. My original approach was to take optical out of the PC and use a MPMax221 to convert optical to SPDIF, and it certainly did the job.

In the search for better audio quality (se also: chronic upgrade-itis) I swapped out the MPMax221 for a Halide Bridge, which is a very nice and compact USB-to-SPDIF converter, and the difference was huge. I'd highly recommend the USB route over the other alternatives, and the Halide Bridge is a lovely-sounding bit of kit.

Meridian 210 and your M DSP's by choice, that’s it, case closed?

The added bonus is that you can easily stream BT, Roon or whatever via Net as well.

It will probably sound much better with its high-performance PSU etc. into your DSP's.

If I were to hook up DSP8000s with a MS600, I can't think of how I'd get sound from the PC to it. I understand that it would be available as a Roon endpoint from the Ethernet connection, but I suppose I would need a separate set of cheap speakers to play audio from the computer (e.g. voicemails from work delivered in my email).

The MS600 + DSP8000s will certainly make lovely noises when you point Roon at it ... however, your PC isn't going to recognise any ethernet-connected device as sound card it can route conventional old PC sound to. So you're right - you won't be able to play voicemails (or those cat videos on Instagram, or other such random items) via the MS600/DSP8000 path. For that, you need either an analogue amp and speakers connected to the analogue out on your PC/laptop - which is totally and completely guaranteed to be the worst-sounding solution - or a DAC of some description connected to the USB port.

Of course, the music and PC solutions aren't mutually exclusive. You can use the MS600 for Roon, and a USB-to-SPDIF adapter for PC audio. Most Meridian DSPs have two digital inputs, so connect the MS600 to the first input and the PC to the second one. You'll have to use the remote to switch the DSPs from one input to the other, but it does give you the opportunity to actually be listening to your music of choice when co-workers are blethering away on the Zoom conference call ... in my experience a lot of what people say on VC sessions is pretty low-value, so provided you continue to look worried and nod occasionally, they'll never know you're enjoying some musical entertainment instead.
