I don't blame you, but surely M are not that secretive or are they just conveniently forgetful to protect the source?
Please don't listen to recordings by Brian Bromberg they are also secret grin

Hi,

The drive used in the 808v6 is (according to Meridian's spare parts list) a TEAC CD-5010B ROM Drive.

Hope this is useful to all trying to find spares.

Cheers,

Steve

I find it hard to believe it’s in Meridian’s interest to do that.

Surely there will be an expected failure rate, so add 20% and keep those in reserve for repairs at the mothership. If everyone of us with an 808v6 goes out and buys a spare it’s like any artificial demand situation. People panic and prices go through the roof.

Personally, I can’t be bothered ripping all my CD’s and the 808 has been superb way of playing my silver discs. It’s a shame it’s no longer economically viable to produce and that’s a shame.

At least M still produce the 818 ... for now!

Just my point of view.

Cheers

Hi Greg,

Whilst I respect your point of view I believe in the old adage "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush".
I respectfully note that Bruce felt it necessary or just opportunistic to buy the last available 808 CD ROM available from Meridian maybe or not with advance warning that the 808 would cease to be current production.

We are now advised, if I understand correctly, that future stock at Meridian will only be available for in warranty repairs up to say 2025, covering M liability.

I have searched for the TEAC item stated by Steve (swpnt) and had no success.
This seems to me like history repeating, as previously encountered with 500 series players.
But ho-hum that's life.

A group buy might have been a possibility for 808 owners.

This is why, some years ago, I took the decision to move to an 818 and streaming. It wasn’t because I loved streaming or that way of owning/listening to music, it was because I’d invested a lot in CD players which, when the drive or laser diode failed, were rendered useless. These were not Meridian CD players I hasten to add, but the principle is the same.

I’m not sure there’s any great mystery here. People are simply moving over to streaming en-masse, making spinning CDs (however desirable) a bit niche. If Meridian weren’t selling enough relative to the non-CD drive equivalent 818, I can see the logic in slimming down the product line.

I hope they use the extra resources to do something very cool and new.

Do you know which drive it is and if so, where one can be bought?

Meridian have a record of all registered 808v6 and their owners, a missed opportunity for sales. Another example of poor planning/communication and the resultant fait accompli.
